Are Pet Clippers The Same As Human Clippers? Hi everyone! I've always taken Harley & Drake to a groomer but have decided that since I'm a stay-at-home mom, I could add grooming to my list of chores!! lol I was wondering...are pet clippers basically the same as human clippers? Also, whether your personal choice is pet or human, what do you recommend? I'm going to PetsMart & PetCo today and would like to get a decent pair at a fair price and thought maybe I could get some advice and/or ideas before I go! I bought a set of Wahl pet clippers at Wal-Mart for $29.97, and I'm not too impressed with them! They are loud and pull Harley's hair more than anything! So, I'm going to take them back and could look where the human clippers are if anyone recommends those! Please help!!! I'm not a professional by any means and don't plan on being one, but I would love more than anything to spend that personal one on one quality time making my babies pretty! Thanks in advance!! Have a great day!! |
I don't know that human and pet clippers are the same, but when we shaved Rocky we used human clippers. My bf cuts his own hair, and his friends hair so he's pretty good at it. The human clippers worked fine on Rocky. |

I have personally at one time purchased the Wahl Pet Clippers from Wal-Mart and they are not worth the money. If you have a Rural King or a similar store like it you can purchase a nice Wahl Clipper in the animal section that works great. Believe I paid around $50-$60 for mine. I have had them for three years and they still work great! They are well worth the money. |
I have the Wahl peanut (for the face, butts and pads). And the Andis AGC super 2 for the body. |
I bought clippers from a supplier that sells hairdresser supplies...I use them on the girls and...I also use them on hubby!!! yes! I use the same blade! |

I watch her when she was shaving a poodle and it cuts through the hair like butter. I thought I'd try the Andis Pet Pro ($59.00) which is a one speed .. I thought I'd practice on it and get the better one later on. My old yorkie has a woolly coat and I had trouble getting through it. I did the snorkie cut on her and she and I were both wore out by the time it was done. It just doesn't have the punch that the 2 speed does. I also read alot of groomer reviews and they all rave about it. I took that one back and had them to order the AGC Super 2-speed ($129.00) It came with the # 10 blade and a big bottle of oil. I also got the Andis Kool care plus ($5.49) to cool the blade.. it also disinfects the clippers. You will need to clip a clean dog to keep the blade from getting dull to fast from dirt, sand and grit. And it never hurts to get an extra blade to use while the other one is getting sharpen. My groomer told me If you shave them down..you will need a 7-F blade for a finished look. You can use other blades by oster,wahls,..etc on Andis clippers. Also comb attachment too..I have seen them run about $10.00. Watch out when you stand them up to shave the belly and under side area.. She said under the arm pits and the at the crook of the upper thigh is the two place you can nick or cut them. Also Use care if using a sissors to clip any stray hairs around the nose area... She has seen a few dog working as a groomer that had their tongue's cut... if they happen to lick at the same time the sissors are closing. Any ways happy clipping everyone....:) |
Great advice ! |
You novice people are scaring me ........ You can really cut your dog bad if you do not know what you are doing so always trim when the vet is open!!!! You can order all of your grooming supplies from Pet Edge and you will save a lot of money. Yes your groomer is right always be very careful around the inside thigh area if you feel there, you will see the very thin skin there and it is easy to lay a dog right open. And yes the arm pits is another area that can be cut very easy. Go slow and watch what you are doing. If you are afraid you can order a # 40 blade and a attachment that will cut the hair the length you like with out the worry of injury to your dog. If you need help with anything you can pm me. I use Wahl human clippers on Hootie and Hobbs. Mainly because my sister's boyfriend GAVE these clippers to me. So, that is just what I've always used. I think I'm going to get one of those little Wahl precision pet clippers for the pads of their feet, though. The clippers I have are just too big for that tiny job. |
I know the Whal clippers I use on Adonis (pet clippers) are a lot quieter than the ones I use on me. I always use the attachments so he doesn't get cut by the blade. I'm too chickenchit of hurting my pup! But the clippers I use on me, are some el-cheapos. Think the brand is "generation". |
My pet clippers are awesome! I found that they were better than the human clippers. They cut better on human heads, too. |
Dog Clippers are not the same as human clippers. Dog Clippers are made in a different way compared to human clippers which are small in size. Human clippers are small and require less place to cover the hair while Dog clippers require more space to trim the entire body of an animal. Humans are having thin hair mostly while Dog is having lot hairs and they play in the dust a lot, they rub their body on the sand. so it cannot be said that a user of human clipper can simultaneously use the same for a dog in clipping the hair of dog. |
