Top Knots! I just recently got a 7 month old girl who I LOVE to death. She is so beautiful with her long hair. I also have a little boy as well but I am super excited with my little Mia since she will let me put her hair up. My question is this: For those of you who put their Yorkie’s hair up in top knots how often do you take them out? I have been taking it out at night and letting her sleep with her hair down just because I know how I am with a pony tail and I start to get a headache if my hair is up too long. I am probably putting too much thought into this huh? Also her hair is very thin up there - so you think it is due to her hair being brushed and pulled up too much? Thanks for the help. |
Hi, My Yorkie is almost eight months old and I have been putting her hair in a topknot for about a month now. I have been wondering the same thing...I have been leaving it in all night and then let it out in the morning...I then put it back up once I have cleaned her face and eyes....I did wonder if she could get a bald spot with too much handling....I hope someone helps us out!!!! Great question!:aimeeyork |
It is best to redo your top not every day and be gentle with taking out the rubber band. If you are very careful you can use a seam ripper and this will save the hair. Do not pull the rubber band out as you will take hair with it. Also make sure after you put your top not in to make sure it is not to tight , so it will be comfortable for your puppies. Best of luck to you. Debbie Ray www.sumtoiyorkies.com |
Thanks for the info! :) |
Your very welcome ! Debbie |
I keep Cali's topknot in all the time. Her hair is too long to leave down. I take the bow out in the evening and massage her head and put it back in and then I redo it sevreal times during the day as needed. |
Great info to know - thanks so much! |
I take it out when it starts to look like she just woke up during the whole day. Or when I just think "The Heck lets give it a break. |

Cali looks like she has such a full head of hair - any thing you give her to promote that? My Mia's hair is just so thin and brittle up on her head so I am looking to make it look healthier and fuller. Thanks! BTW Cali is Gorgeous!! |
I always keep Sugar's hair in a topknot. I know what you mean about that ponytail headache but it doesn't seem to bother him so maybe dogs are just different. I did buy a pack of those cheap plastic barrettes (shaped like ducks, flowers, etc.) and the intention was I would use those for nighttime since they aren't as tight. Haven't been too good with the follow through though. I redo Sugar's topknot every morning and give him a little scalp massage also. |

I have just been taking it out at night and letting her sleep like cousin it. :p :p The only thing is Sugars hair is sooooooo thick and full and Mia's is soooooo thin and barely there! I would not worry if she had Sugars hair because it is so thick a few hairs here and there and you would bever know. (That lucky Sugar - he has pantene commercial hair). :p :p |

As for the thin hair - I have two yorkies - both of them have thinner hair on their heads than on their bodies. I think it's natural for this hair to be slightly thinner. And I wouldn't worry about creating any baldspots by putting in a topknot everyday - just be careful not to pull/break hair as you are putting it up or taking it down and definitely give their little head a break once in a while. |

She also does not have much hair on her head so maybe it is normal  |
