Nails? How often do you need to trim your furbabies nails? Bernie's nails seem to grow so quickly and Kona's grow much slower. Do you trim the nails yourself or do you take your furbaby to the groomers to get it done? |
Gracie gets hers done when she goes to the groomer once a month |
Sissy's also grow fast. I try to do them at least every other week. I use a dremmel-type of nail tool (from an electric human nail kit). It works much better than trying to trim them. She still doesn't like it, but she sits still with my hubby holding her and doesn't scream like when we try to trim her nails. Much cheaper than a groomer, too!! I already had the nail kit when I got this suggestion, but I've recently seen them sold for $20 (about the price of one nail trim). Good luck!! |
I do mine every other bath.... So once about every two to three weeks. |
We've bought the clippers but so far are too chicken try it ourselves. I watched the last time we had it done and it seems easy enough. Punkin seems to need hers down about every 8 weeks, she walks on pavement everyday so I guess that keeps them worn down pretty good. Yesterday while flipping channels I saw the TV show with Stanley Coren http://www.stanleycoren.com/bio.htm He does segments with people in their homes when they having furbaby problems. Sort of like a Canadian Dog Whisperer. He said that it can hurt the dogs to have their nails clipped. He suggested clipping after they have stood in warm water while having a bath or take warm wash cloths and wrap them around the paw, cover with a baggie and close with a loose fitting elastic. What 15 minutes or so and then cut. Has anyone heard this before? |
I trim my babies nails every 2-3 weeks too. |

Yes.. Not the washcloth part, but clipping after a bath. I always do mine after bathing just for this reason. I wrap them up in a towel and then clip away. The nails are a bit softer from being in the water. The only time it should really hurt them is if you hit the quick. It's just like cutting our nails... You don't really feel it at the ends, but if you goo too far.. OUCH! I know some pups like to scream bloody murder (my parent's dog is like that), but I think it's just over-dramatization. My two fought and fought at first too, but once they figured I wouldn't let up no matter how hard they struggled they just kind of gave up and let me do it. |

Bella gets hers trimmed every 6 weeks at Petsmart. It's only $8 so we've been going there though DH thinks he will try to do it himself next time. We'll only cut off a little though since we're so scared of hurting her! |
