Stinky itchy skin...what do I do with her poor coat? As I've discussed in another post, I'm taking Ginger for allergy testing on Thursday. But...in the meantime, she's back to chewing like crazy and has removed much of the hair in her midsection....poor thing. (this since I left the house this morning for a 6 hour shift) Anyway, we've been growing her hair, and I don't want to give her a complete trim, but she looks pretty pathetic right now. Any ideas? |
Mabey you should buy one of those collar rings so she can't get to her body and put some type of booties on her feet. |

Dog would go fruit cake doing something like that. If the skin is itchy and has an odour, it could be from allergies and it could be a sebhorrea or even a bacteria causing the problems. |

Make sure its not mites. Chachi had a similar problem where he was knawing the skin to the point of losing hair and we thought it was allergies. The vet did a skin scrape and it was mites. Its best to check all avenues |
2 Attachment(s) Maybe you could put a cotton shirt on her. For some reason it helped Mitzi against the itching when she had the same problem. For her feet I cut fingers off garden gloves and fix them with elastic band and velcro. Did you check her food for corn and wheat ingredients? I can send you a set of those 'shoes' if you like, PM me about that. |
One of mine had the itchies and the Vet found nothing serious to be the cause or culprit. She said that because he is so low to the ground, that he was reacting to the grasses and pollen left on his skin and coat. So, rather than putting him on any prescribed medicines, she suggested oatmeal baths two to three times a week. One would think that constant bathing would cause drying of the skin and even more itching - But, that is so far from the truth. Actually, worked like a charm! I buy the Aveno Oatmeal Bath/Soak (the one generally used for chicken pox relief for skin kids) and use half a pack per three to four inches of tub water. DO NOT add any type of cleanser such as shampooing during these soaks, and definately no scrubbing. Just pour the water over the entire body with a cup. She "should" experience immediate temporary relief until which time you have a chance to get her to your Vet. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted on her condition. |

Sophie had to take Benadryl during the spring due to seasonal allergies. Then a little later in the summer she had to take it again for a couple of weeks and now she is fine. We took Sophie to the vet and this is what he recommended. Hope Ginger is feeling better soon. Those itchies can be such a pain for a little one. :) |
Wow! So much good advice! Somehow I missed all these responses. I thought noone was getting back to me  . Guess I shouldn't have assumed I'd see it in new posts, and kept a closer eye on things. Well, tomorrow's the vet appointment. I had wondered about the aveeno bath, and about putting something on her feet, I'll definitely try the cotton t-shirt...duh, should've thought about that. And thanks for the comment about mites (yikes) I'll make sure the vet checks. Amber, please don't be upset because someone disagreed with your suggestion. It was a good temporary solution, but I also agree about going nuts if she couldn't itch.... Well, since I first posted, I've put her back on benedryl, just to get us through until tomorrow. I'm sure I'll have to wait awhile for the results, so I'll be trying out some of your suggestions! thanks again! |

Did you ever find out what was wrong with Ginger's skin?! There is a newbie that just posted with the exact same problem. I thought maybe if you figured out what was wrong with Ginger, that it could help her with her problem, too. |
