Groomer says my shampoo is causing dry skin??
 
I recently had my yorkie to the groomers and she said her skin is really dry and asked what kind of shampoo I used. I told her Pet Silk and she said all she uses on her dogs is Baby shampoo. I have noticed her scratching some so it must be the dry skin...what should I do??

I have read that adding flaxseed oil to there food will help dry skin.I'm not sure how much to add though. Maybe someone else will.

you could try an oatmeal shampoo... or it could be her food too i had a problem with snickers itching and dry skin - check the ingredients and see what ur feeding has corn in it
once i switched foods i had no more trouble w/the dry skin or itching...

**also i use cc systems day-to-day kit its great and $10 and alternate it with aussie (human) moisturizing shampoo and deeep conditioner**

I switched their dog food to Solid Gold Wee Bits w/ salmmon meal. That seemed to have helped their dry skin. I also dilute their oatmeal shampoo and leave a good conditioner on their coat for 10 - 15 min.

Another thing that seems to help is a good rinse after shampoo/conditioning. Rinse, rinse, rinse!!! Shampoo left on their coat is very drying! A great way to tell if their coat is shampoo-free is to rinse them in a plastic dish tub.
"Rinse - dump out water, rinse - dump out water..."
You will be amazed how many times you'll need to rinse the dog before the tub water is free from shampoo!

When Baby had dry skin, the vet gave me Hylit shampoo for her. It works well! :D

I just use my shampoo and conditioner on Bentley. I use Graham Webb from the salon.

I've gotten lots of great advice on YorkieTalk for dry yorkie skin, including:

add olive oil (just a little) to their food

oatmeal baths (try Aveeno bath, and use no added soaps)

food with no corn/wheat

rinse, rinse, rinse (i found this to be true from personal experience with Ginger)

I wholeheartly agree what great advice this forum provides. I used an oatmeal shampoo on one of my girls who had the itchies and it solved it immediately, Not only that, but about a month ago I had a serious adverse reaction to penicillin that put my entire body in rash and welts. After several days of benadryl and valium (which didn't put me out and didn't give me much relief) I decided to to make a paste of oatmeal and smeared it all over me. It is really messy, but it was the only relief I found. Write this down as your doctor won't recommend it. LOL. I had never heard about oatmeal to help soothe the skin until this forum. So thanks to all of you. Also, I was very sick for quite awhile and my girls hair was such a mess that I got my husband to shampoo them and then slather them in mayonaise. Eggs and oil, what harm could it do? (whole lotta protein) It worked miracles, and fixed them right up. It was just shocking how much their coats soaked up, but it worked beautifully.
