Ewww... Should schedule the first grooming?? Yesterday I noticed that Mia had a clump of poo stuck in the vicinity of her butt, and I had a very difficult time removing the icky thing. Today I noticed the same thing, and I really don't want to clean her butt every day, or worry about where she put her butt before I noticed her "problem." I want her hair to grow long, so I was kind of hoping I could do without the grooming experience many people seem to be unhappy about. But this issue of stuck poo got me thinking... maybe I should schedule a grooming session to get rid of the hair in her back area. I cannot possibly cut her hair myself. I'll do the brushing, combing, bathing, and maybe a little trimming the ends of her hair once in a while, but I am too afraid to cut her hair so close to the skin. What do you guys think? Is it standard to trim the hair on her behind, and under her paws even if you want the hair to grow? How does it work? Please help. Thanks. |
Good morning.....if you don't want cling-ons then yes you'll need to keep her behind free of hair. All four of mine have long coats and you can't tell that their little behinds are shaved. I use a Wahl mustache clipper and it works great. Have never knicked any of them and I've been doing it for almost 3 years every other weekend. Maybe if you watch how the groomer does it the first time, it will give you more confidence to try it yourself. |
I bought a little portable hair clipper (battery operated) at Meijer that is much quieter than the typical hair clippers - made specifically for pets. It is really easy to clean up the behind area. If you don't feel comfortable trying it yourself, watch the groomer first - but really very easy. I keep Sissy groomed myself and I have no previous grooming experience at all. I think she looks great and have received many compliments on her. |
Its very easy to shave their bottoms. You just lift their tail and zip zip, you're done in a matter of seconds, depending on how well behaved your little one is being. The small moustache trimmers work great and you can find them cheap too. I got mine from Wal-mart, they are battery operated, they were between 10-20 dollars not sure exactly how much though. I don't know how others handle the hair on the bottoms of their feet but I use the smae clippers and just trim off as much as I can. The trimmers are great if you are going to do anything on your own at home. They work great for the ears and any of the belly/hygiene area if you decide to trim it too. |
I use a Wahl Peanut for all of the trimming including the behind. My mom has 2 yorkies and she uses scissors for the behind. Both ways work fine. Just lift the tail and trim anywhere you think poo might get stuck. |
i used a wahl to trim lexi's butt no matter if her hair is long or short.. its much cleaner and the dog is much happier... pick up tail and one stroke the hair is gone.. so easy so fast, no more cling ons |
Lola gets this done at the groomer. My vet calls it the "potty cut." :p |

I almost took her to the groomer for this to, but after a little research I got courage to did it myself. I did it will just a scissors and took about a min. Good luck. |
