Cottony Coat Ok, all you groomers out there. I have a female that has cotton candy hair!! I have tried Ice-On-Ice, Cowboy Magic, Johnson's No More Tangles, Mayonnaise, Olive Oil, gosh, I could go on and on. Does any one of you have a favorite conditioner you use on cottony coats? Also, I have heard NEVER brush dry. Then I've heard NEVER brush wet!?!? Which is it? Blow-dry or air-dry? Out of the 6 Yorkies I have, she's the only one that has this kind of hair. Can someone help??!! Suz |
Can you post a picture? Is the coat really frizzy? I've just started using the cowboy magic. But before that I used the conditioner that comes in the preference by Lorel hair color. I can't use it on my own hair because it makes it so soft and limp so I thought Id try it on Ollie. Aslo my daughter bought an ionic hair dryer to help her own hair from getting frizzy when she dries it. She used to have to use a curling iron to straighten it after blow drying, now she doesn't I read never brush dry. |
I have one that has a cottony coat. Have you tried using the coat handlers shampoo and conditioner? I found that worked good on him and also the Plush Puppy is good. I wasn't real impressed with the Plush Puppy at first but I found the more I have used it the better his coat is to brush.(I have just started using the Plush Puppy this last month). I also think that using the cc gold series brush has been good for his type of coat. The reason they say not to brush a wet coat is due to the stretching of the hair when you are brushing makes it weaker and will break off. Brushing while it is dry will pull with the tangles and break it off. I used to blow dry Buckeye (cotton hair), I don't do that any more. I just let him air dry like I do the rest of them. His coat has improved a lot by doing that. I let him sit in a towel and throw a blanket in the dryer for a few minutes to get it warm, then wrap him in that so he doesnt get cold. when he is still damp is when I do the brushing. |
1 Attachment(s) this is not a very good picture of him. he isn't brushed here but it will give you a good idea if it is the same type of coat that you are dealing with. His coat is fairly short here too. |
Did you try the Cowboy Magic Concentrated Detangler and Shine (leave in) or just the shampoo and conditioner? Your the first person I've seen that has said the Cowboy Magic didn't work. I think it is a miracle product. |

The baby of my three has a cottony coat. (i think). She hardly ever gets matts but has that little wave in the ends that is hard to comb thru. I have started using Panetene conditioner on all mine and it workd wonders for making my silky haired ones even silkier and the little one smoother. someone on here recommended it and I had a bottle i had never used so I tried it and love it. |

Welp, off to the store. Thanks for your imput. Suz |
The ice on ice works great for me and I do not brush mine dry.....I put the ice on ice on then brush them. I don't know what to tell you to help since that doesn't work for you. |
coat Buckeye may have a slightly cotton texture to his coat..but it really does not look bad at all. The really bad cotton I have groomed is more like wool..there is no detangling..it has to be cut.. MOST true cotton are on the darker side in color and there is litle or no shine to the hair...and it is just about impossible to wreck one..brush wet or dry doesn't seem to matter...if you break a few hairs, there are 500 more to take their place..LOL I like Vellus Tangle Out..it can be used on the coat for brushing and it is slick, slides through the mats..good luck and you have my deepest admiration for trying to maintain it. |
Bell has a true cotton coat and mostly I keep it short. I do every once in a while let it grow and I always use pantene on her hair. I comb, not brush and I usually do this dry. If I don't comb her out right after a bath I might as well shave her right then and there as I will never get the matts out. Your boy does not look like his coat is that bad, try using a long tooth comb. Good Luck!;) |
I just put up a new thread on "Yorkie Grooming Talk" about the Redken All Soft product. I used it, along with the Redken Anti-Snap today and Mia's coat looked better than it ever has. Much better than with the Ice on Ice. She is more of a silky than a cottony coat, but I still think this might work for you. One good thing about buying the Redken stuff, is if you don't like it for your yorkie, you can always use it on your own hair. My daughter has highlighted blonde hair that she uses a flat iron on every day, and these two products have saved her hair. That is what gave my the idea to try it on Mia. |
Ok. I went to work and found the Vive stuff. (I work at K-Mart, so we usually have that kind of stuff) When I did a price check on it, it said that we were no longer carrying this product and what's on the shelf will not be re-ordered. So......like a good employee, I bought the two bottles on the shelf. Stuff smells great. I went home and gave my cottonhaired furkid a bath, and tried it. It seems to work well. She has a lot of matted hair, so it's going to take a couple of days before I get all of them out. But, for the most part, it did work. I do use Ice on Ice on her and it does work, eventually. She just gets so tired of sitting and being brushed (combed, actually), that I end up giving in and letting her go for a few days. This time, I'm determined to get ALL the mats out and keep her done, daily. Well, ok, maybe not daily, but more than I've been doing. Yorkie Rose, I agree with ou on the 500 hairs. I think she's got 5,000,000 hairs, so if a few get broken, I don't worry about it. I also cut out "clumps" that are so bad I can't get them out with a comb or a brush. Besides, she has puppies too and either I get the mats out soon, or the puppies will help make more. I shave her belly so they don't get all messed up when they eat. Thank you everyone for your help. I'm still going to try and get the Cowboy Magic stuff and try that too. I'll let you know how that goes. Take care, Suz |
Hey Suz - I use Sea Breeze water based Oil (by Plush Puppy) on Chanel and it lays her hair right down for days...I'm on my 2nd bottle and can't do without it now.... |
V- That's one I've never heard of!!I've heard of Sea Breeze for oily skin on people. Is that kind of the same stuff?? Is it my imagination, or, are your avatar pics getting washed out looking?? Maybe it's my compuer, but your pics seem to be fading!! Just thought I'd see if it's me or has anyone else seen it too? Suz |
