Puppy Cut on Straight Silky Coat? Hello everyone. I'm hoping I can get some answers from some of you with silky coated straight haired babies. Abbie is my first Yorkie. She's 18 months old now and it seems to me her coat is growing very, very slowly and it's very fine and thin. I think she's considered a silky coat based on one, the texture it feels to me and two, her eyes reflect green. (See how much I've learned from this website?) We live in Central Florida and it's so very hot here. I've thought about cutting her shorter but because it's so fine and stick straight, I'm afraid it will look choppy. My groomer just left (she comes to my house, I'm so lucky) and she was going to use a clipper comb that leaves the hair with a 1 1/4" length. I told her I'll do some more research and let her know next time. Also, her mustache gets so crusty I guess from saliva and when she pees, she always wants to sniff where she just peed (To make sure it's hers?!?!?)so of course it gets smelly very fast. How do you all keep your babies faces clean? I bathe her at least once a week and her face gets washed about every 3 days but honestly could use it every day. I use a washcloth but I have a hard time getting the odor and crustiness out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! |
Sorry, I forgot to tell you that I posted a couple of photos of her in the gallery. Still haven't figured out how to get them here. |

coat My girls have the same coat...and I have grooemd all types..I use an 8 1/2 blade on the body, leave a skirt, leg feathers from the shoulders, but trim to a nice shape... full facial and head hair..but I taper away from the mouth in a downward shape...sometimes I leave a top knot and on others I shape bangs and feathers. |
Buddy has a very silky coat, however I have never let it grow to long. In the summer I get him a puppy cut. He is like velvet and loses the part on his back when this gets done. He too had thin hair but he is now 2 1/2 and from getting him cut his hair is thicker and he even has chest hair now! It was sparce last year so I guess the cutting has really benefited him. I had him shaved down last year but this summer back to puppy cut. I think you will like it. His face is cut just a little below his mouth with about 1" beard. He looks adorable and I know he feels cooler and carefree. I just wipe him mouth after eating and drinking water. Good luck. |
Hi every one. anyone know of a sitr with instuctions for cutting yorkies? |
How do you know if your dog has silky hair or not? Can you tell from an early age? |
My Annie loves to smell all the "pee mail" we come across on our daily walks, so we always wash her face well with a cloth when we return home. I also wipe off her feet as I am afraid of fertilizer or ant killer etc getting on her feet while out. Also stops mud or snow being tracked through the house. Started doing this when I got her in January and now she waits to get it done after a walk as she knows she will get a cookie. |

Grooming wipes have become my best friend they not only clean but they smell good too!! |
Personally I would never cut her hair. Dogs coat actually keep them warm on cold days and cool on hot days. They really should keep their coats. I think if you change your dogs diet to home cooking or at least Innova or California Natural (they are made by the same company) it will help with her problems. The one thing that concerns me is her need to check out her bottom each time she pees. I'd take some of her urine in for testing, and her feces too. She could have some problems in those areas. |
