What should I look for in a Groomer? I just got my first Yorkie, he's 8 weeks old and already is in need of a trim. What should I be looking for a good doggie groomer? What questions should I be asking? is there any terms I should be familiar with? I think for the time being I just want him to have a simple short puppy cut. Is there a "standard" for this, or is it a matter of preference? Is there anything else I should be considering? Any advice, links etc would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance. |
I called about 10 groomers b/f i decided to go w/ the one I have now. i asked how long have they been in business and have they groomed many yorkies b/f. i also asked how many different cuts are there for yorkies and if they had pictures of yorkies that he/she have worked on b/f. I prefer the long coat look so I visit my groomer once/month. I don't have much experience myself... |
1 Attachment(s) Welcome to YT call around and speak to the groomers, and go and check out a couple of places. Also when you take him in (which I would wait until 12 weeks), make sure you take a picture or be very specific on what you would like them to do. Also, tell them you want a puppy cut normally they know what that means, now do they do it right not always. I have attached a picture that I took in for Georgie. Good luck:D |
Ask them how they handle difficult (biting) dogs. I would clearly ask if they drug their problem dogs. There are some groomers that do this without telling the owners (they use ACE). Since I do have some problem rescue dogs I understand the need for meds sometimes but to not tell the owner what is going on is wrong. |
What does ACE stand for? |
grooming Make sure the groomer can give you plenty of references, ask if they have ever had an unhappy owner. How long have they been grooming, where and by whom they were trained.Personally I will never take my baby back to PetSmart or Petco, they hire groomers that have no training and there have been so many complaints from customers.Get out your phone book and look for breeders ,ask them if there are any groomers in the area they would reccommend .If there are no breeders call your vet.Remember ,this is YOUR baby they are using scissors on. I would also ask if they have a video camera that shows the grooming procedure.I don't want someone I don't know not handling a delicate puppy ( or any animal ) in a gentle and proper way.Good luck,I hope you find the right one because the wrong groomer can make your sweet baby a nervous wreck every time you step through the door to have it done again. :animal-pa |
