hair dryer terror!!!! 1 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, maybe someone has some help. Bruno is terrified of the hair dryer. He tears my arms off when I try to dry him, but if I don't use it he freezes! Is there any ideas on how to make this easier for him? He is 3 months old and each time I use it, it gets worse:confused:   Kaitlyn |
Cute picture Mine don't mind the dryer. Does yours blow to hard, or maybe too hot? Maybe just turn it on and let him get used to the noise, and let him get used to it when it is not turned on. Mine actually seem to like it, cause it is warm. |
I don't know if this has anything to do with it...but The first time I used a dryer on Ginger she was 6 mos. old...I had been bathing her, and towel drying her, but her hair is thin, and it was short, so she dried really quickly. BUT everyday, since she was about 3 months old, she's sat beside me in the bathroom while I get ready, including BLOW DRYING my hair. I think she was sooooo used to the blow dryer that it didn't even phase her when I finally turned it on her. She even seems to enjoy it now:rolleyes: Silly little doggie! Anyway, my point is, perhaps just getting your furbaby used to the hair dryer for a few minutes each day, while it's not pointing in his direction, may help alot! (I'm a big one to talk, I can't get Ginger to stop freaking out everytime I turn on the clippers...something I've just recently decided to try out on my own) Good luck, and keep us posted! I'd love to know what finally works for you! |
Oscar has never minded the blow dryer. Actually he has always thought it was a game when I dry my hair...I flip my head over and dry underneath and he is steadily trying to attack my hair! I got one of those dryer stands you see "advertised on TV". That way I can have both hands free to dry him and hold him. He still will not let my dry his face. He puts his head down and covers his head with both paws...it is so funny! I would start by wrapping him in a towel really snugly and let someone else turn on the blow dryer in the other room. Talk to him gently, rubbing him and tell him it is o.k. Slowly walk with him to the other room all the while reassuring him it is o.k. Maybe you can get him used to it this way. I would not force it on him tho...might really be an issue with him later on. |
Jewels is afraid of the hair dryer. Chachi is not. I turn it on low and lether listen to it a few minutes before I start drying her. |
Both of mine started out hating the blowdryer but are now pretty easy to do. I got them used to it by sitting on the floor and drying them in my lap while my daughter fed them treats:p . It really didn't take too long before they were used to it and now they stand on my bathroom counter to get dried- no treats (until we finish of course). |
I use a blow dryer from Sharper Image...one of those Ionic ones...I love it! It's QUIET, number one...and number two, it's quick! 1875 watts, put it on the second setting and put it about 12 inches from the little one and constantly comb or rub the hair while it's drying and in no time it's dry. NONE of my dogs mind the Sharper Image Ionic Hair Dryer....but yet they'll run away barking from others. LOL :D |
If your yorkie is afraid of the hair dryer try putting cotton in his ears. Start with the dryer on the lowest setting and start as far from his head as possible. Another idea, rig up some type of stand for the dryer so you don't have to hold it and cuddle the puppy in front of it and gradually get closer. |
Maybe if you gave him a toy or a treat while you blow him it would help. Someone on here put cheese on a plate and put it in the microwave, so it was nicely stuck to the plate and took some time to get off, maybe that could work. When I started to blow Dennis I propped him up so he could look out the window and that seemed to help for him. He gets so interested in what is going on that he does not seem to mind the blower. I think it is more the noise that bothers them. I keep it on high but don’t get very close, so it is more like a nice warm wind tunnel. He is a real cutie! |
get the quietest dryer you can find and once or twice a day you should run it next to your baby without blowing it at him. Get him use to the noise...... it's the noise that's freaking him out. Good Luck! |
:) While you're getting him used to it dry him good with one towel when you finish bathing him and then wrap him in a nice fresh towel straight from the dryer. Gypsy just loves this and it keeps her from shivering, I just hold her until she's dry enough to brush. |

I think his fear is from the groomer we used to go to: they had blow dryers attached to the kennels, Mojo would always be in the far corner and rolled into the tiniest little ball trying to get away from it. :( I always use one towel and then the warm fresh one, then use the blow dryer while I am holding him. I think for him, it is the noise, so it wouldn't hurt for us to try to quit one - have you checked into that? |
