New hair?
 

Ok so this is kind of a strange question and I'm sorry about the title I had no clue. I've noticed the past few times I've bathed Reagan that there is a bunch of hair on the side of her head that is quite a bit shorter than the rest, maybe an inch to inch and a half long. Its between her eye and ear and starts about the corner of her eye and goes down a little ways. I have a picture to show what I'm talking about but I don't know how well you can see it. In the pic there a darker section of hair and at about the top of it is the line of where the short hair ends, if that makes sense. So I'm kinda wondering what would cause this. I thought that maybe I had burnt it when I was drying her, but I'm always careful with the heat plus she doesn't like her head to be dried so I leave it alone anyway. My next thought was that it was breaking from putting her hair up but some hair that starts growing below the corner of her eye is short as well so I wouldn't have been putting that hair up. So any ideas, would the groomer have cut it or could it be new hair growing in. She's 1 1/2 by the way. Oh and the tips of the shorter hairs are lighter, just the very tips, this doesn't show up in the pic, which is why I first thought I may have burnt it but I really really don't think I could have or did. Oh and one last thing she only has a tiny bit on her right side that is like this but the left side has a bunch, its very noticable. I'm not really freaking out about it or anything but when you dog's hair end up doing something funny you get a bit curious. Anyway thanks everyone.

That's exactly what Chelsey's hair is doing! I took her to the vet for this and she gave her a food suppliment of omega 3 & 6... she said that should help, Chelsey has a lot of those shorter hairs on the top of her head and on the sides. Chelsey is also 1,5 year old.

Chanel's hair is starting to do the same, but smaller parts of hair.

Yorkie hair is like people hair they are always losing some and always growing new. Since she is so young, I would guess it is just her adult coat getting thicker.

JeanieK - That's really what I was leaning towards. I just looked at the hair closer and it really doesn't look like its been broken or split, the ends look healthy, so you're prob right, just new growth.

Thanks Jeaniek & Hickey007 - it probably is new hair, i noticed that Chelsey's hair texture is changing, it's more managable than what it used to be with less tangles and seems to be getting thicker :thumbup:

I should have asked you guys first before taking her to the vet lol :p

I'm a newbie to this site, and got my first yorkie in November of last year. She's the best baby I've ever had. Elphie keeps me company and goes absolutely everywhere with me! I do, however, have a question about her coat. I've noticed that around her rear end it's broken in places and a little short. Any suggestions on what I can do to help rejuvenate her coat and get that beautiful yorkie shine?

Chelsey's hair also looked like it was breaking, but i learnt that it was new adult hairs coming through.
A good grooming product is no luxury for yorkies, plush puppy and CC system is very good. I also use the Dogs & stuff products range on my girls, the results are excellent.:thumbup:

Thanks for the info Chelsey. As I was reading more on the site I found the website for CC and just ordered Elphie some of the products to try. About how old was your baby when the adult haid started to come in? Elphie will be eight months next week. Is that about the age to start looking for adult hair?

A month ago i took Chelsey to the vet because i was worried about her coat, i thought it might be a vitamin dificiancy she had, so the vet gave her some omega 3 & 6, she is now 17 months old. I have now noticed that Chanel's hair is doing the same, she just turned 1 year.

Do Elphie's ends look split ?

her ends look somewhat split, but moreso her hair is dull and dry. We will be making a trip to the vet next week.

I think we need Villette's advice here, she is a professional with hair :D

LOL !! Mandy - you are way WAY TOO NICE !! I am so NOT a pro -:D but I did look carefully at that picture and to me - it LOOKS like new growth. BUT - since one side is more pronounced - it makes me wonder if the hair isn't breaking off - is this hair that you put up in a bow ?

IF you have been to a groomer recently.... they may have done a booboo - I just had Chanel done - and they chopped UNDER her long hair behind the ear - I was a bit miffed cause it was a silly mistake - but hey - it'll grow back and it can't be seen ...a groomer CAN make mistakes and we may not see them right away.

I doubt you burnt it with a hairdryer - you'd have smelled that... and your yorkie would have yelped....so that cant be it. (always use the low heat setting on hair & hold the dryer WAY away from them)

Another thing is yorkies LOVE to rub their heads on stuff - can she be doing that and causing breakage ?

(MY cocker Tessa cleans her silly face Wall-Walking down on our hallway - she shaved off her whole eyebrow on one side doing THAT....LOL...I'm not kidding ! My wall was a mess too. Goobers everywhere lol !)

So...saying all that - the only thing I can think of that this could be is just the way your yorkies hair is growing ....or its Growing out from a hair-cut and you just now noticed it....either way it's kind of a puzzle isn't it ?

Do you use any special hair products on her hair ?

Ok some of it may have gone in a bow but if you run a line from the corner of her eye straight back towards her ear some of the shorter hair starts under that line so I know I wouldn't have put that hair up. And if I did she would be walking in circles because one eye would be shut b/c of it.

As far as a groomer, I mentioned that earlier but now that I think of it I don't think that's it, because she hasn't been to a groomer since Nov. I do just basic touchups myself ears bum feet nails etc. So if they did it considering the length it is now they would've had to have shaved it and I would have noticed it. Its actually a fair amount of hair so I would've noticed that much gone in that area. They did an excellent job so I wasn't trying to blame them or anything, I'd go back in a heart beat just haven't needed to lately.

On the hair dryer bit, I agree and also do those things. I'm a little weird about things I just immediately start thinking oh no I'm horrible what did I do. Plus like I said earlier I really don't dry her head anyway because she doesn't like it and hides her face.

Now the rubbing of the head thing, that's something I didn't think of and could really be it. Whenever she gets on our bed the first thing she does is rub her head all over the covers(nice to know this is a yorkie thing not just a crazy Reagan thing). Just her head, and she isn't constantly itching other parts of her body and really the only place that she does it is on our bed. But I would say that she does it enough to break hair. She does it when her hair is up, when its down, when I just put it down, when I just put it up, even when its been down all day, it doesn't matter when. The only thing that makes me doubt this is that the ends of the hair look healthy, no breakage or split ends. Although the tips are lighter than the rest of the hair. The hair is the gold/brown around her face and the tips are much much lighter, not quite white but very light. So maybe, I'm incorrect and this is a sign of breakage. This is also what made me immediately think hair dryer because since they were lighter my first thought is that they were burnt, but the hair itself doesn't look like its been burned(no singed ends or anything).

Oh and as far as the products we used to used Plush Puppy and have recently switched two weeks ago to Pet Silk and Shea Pet(I had to try them both). The hair was like that before I switched though, and when I took her to the groomers way back when he said she had a very healthy coat and skin and I was using Plush Puppy. So I don't think its the products.

See the fact that it was more so on one side had me wondering too. Its on the other but nothing like it is on that one side. I think I'm just going to chaulk it up to new hair growth and just keep a close eye on the rest of her coat to make sure other funny things don't keep happening.

That is the way the hair looks when it breaks from a top knot, scratching, playing, general normal life...the hair shaft and even the pore when it is broken short will turn golder...Kate has a deep gold patch of hair of her chest from her itchy skin bout last month...
Both my girls were scratching, we could find nothing...two days on Heartworm meds and they have 100% stopped..vet said it stops itching as well and parasites.
I can understand if they had fleas or mites, but they did not...anyway it works and they are happy.

Oh so it has been broken. Well I'll really watch her. She's on heartworm prev. stuff, but really isn't itchy anywhere except her head and that is really only on our bed. I kinda think she just likes the feel of our blankets. Which like I said in an earlier post as much as she rubs her hair on the bed it wouldn't surprise me if she is breaking her hair. I guess maybe I shouldn't let her do it as much. I'll watch her and make sure it isn't something else we/she is doing to break it and also try to limit her head rubbing on the bed time.

It is hard not to allow them to be dogs..if she was doing damage to her skin and or making blad spots, I would allow her to scratch...I have told Kate she can be a dog, she was wearing booties when I was going to show her....LOL
