Ear Hair can someone explain the whole plucking hair out of the ears? How do I know what hair to pluck and what tool do you use for this? I have never plucked Hair from Remmy's ears and to tell you the truth I'm not sure the groomers ever did. |
OUCH  I've never plucked Pippa's ear hair and don't intend to unless it starts to bother her. |
Hi. I'm sure someone else knows more here than me, but I'll chime in since no one else has yet. :-) I've had a poodle before Zoie and he had to have his ears plucked too. The groomer/breeder who I got him from would just put special powder in his ear and "pull" the hair out a little at a time. HArd and fast was how it looked to me. She wasn't trying to hurt him, but he yelped when she did it. I know with him the only hair she pulled was the hair in the ear "hole" not the hair that just lines the outside of the ears. It's the hair actually down into the ear, where the hair isn't too thick thank goodness. I had Zoie groomed once already and the groomer didn't even pluck it out. I'm going to find someone else cause I can't bear to do it to her. They also have to express their anal glands, another good reason to go to a groomer! |
my mom's yorkie is named remy too. i luv that name. my baby romeo gets his ears plucked when he gets groomed. i'm not sure why either. maybe it's cosmetic??? |
I thought it had something to do with ear infections but I guess I was hoping someone on here did it before. I want to do my own grooming and need to understand and see how this is done. Remmy has never had a problem with ear infections and he will be 4 in Oct. But I want to do this if it is necessary. |
Plucking ear hair is to help prevent ear infections. Dogs with a lot of hair growing up from the ear canal may need it pulled out because the hair traps moisture and bacteria that leads to ear infections. Removing the hair allows more air to circulate and keeps the ear canals dryer and cleaner. This is more of a problem on dogs with flapped down larger ears like poodles or cocker spaniels. I have rarely (almost never) run across a yorkie that really needed it's ear hair pulled. Certainly neither of my two have any problem with it. It you do have a dog with excess ear hair and feel that it needs to be pulled you can get ear powder (I assume) from Petsmart/Petco. The ear powder just makes it easier to get a grip on the hair and may be a bit medicated also. You can pull the hair out with your fingers. Just make sure you have a good grip on it (just a few hairs at a time) and gently/firmly pull them straight out. Just make sure you are not pulling any hairs that are growing on the ear and not comming up from the ear canal. It shouldn't hurt your dog if you are pulling the right hairs out. But again, chances are your yorkie doesn't really need his ear hair removed anyway unless you have been having ear infection problems and if thats the case talk to your vet about it. Now, if this were a Poodle discussion it would be a much bigger issue. |
I have always done my own grooming and have never plucked the ear hair. But if you need to, I imagine you can get the powder and plucker at the pet store. A have also never expressed the anal glands and have never had a problem with that either. I had a cocker that had a problem with the anal glands, but neither of my yorkies ever have. |
Well I took Jazzy to the vet yesterday and the Vet said she had an ear infection and that her ears need to be plucked. I told her I'm not plucking hair from ears I'll leave that to the groomer. They said when you bring her in again we'll pluck them for you because she needs one more shot and the vet said don't take her until it's given. She does have hair growing out of her ear but I wouldn't say it's a whole lot. |
