Help me make a topknot decision 1 Attachment(s) Ok YorkieTalk friends. I need some comments here. I know you're not shy. I'm thinking about cutting off Deuce's topknot. I have been keeping his coat shorter this year to stay on top of any fleas or ticks. On occasion I have been known to get scissor happy but I'm not sure about doing this. The reason I'm considering a topknot cut is because I'm going to have total ankle replacement on Feb. 1 and I know I'm gong to be a mess for about a good 1-2 weeks. Presently I groom Deuce daily and end up doing his topknot about 3 or 4 times a day. My hubby is all thumbs when it comes to doing the job. Part of my concern is that I do not cut around Deuces snout or eyes at all right now. I am not sure the top knot hair will stay back if I don't cut into the bridge of his nose between his eyes. I don't want to have to do that. Deuce has a very dense coat on his head. Have any of you gone through this? Will I be sorry I cut it? I know I have seen a few show dogs get a crew cut when they were done in the show ring. Please let me hear FOR or AGAINST doing this. I'm attaching a pic of his current cut. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2017! |
I'm so sorry you are facing surgery. Deuce stole my heart long ago. He's gorgeous , I have never cut Katie's hair on the bridge of her nose or near her eyes because I really believe the weight of the hair keeps it out of her eyes. Kate has a very thick, silky coat. Years ago, when I had my other three Yorkies, a groomer cut the hair by the eyes and on the bridge of the nose, and it was horrible growing out and was terrible for their eyes. With my first Yorkie a groomer cut it, and I constantly had to cut her hair to keep it out of her eyes. You do such a beautiful job with Deuce's grooming. I do Katie's topknot once a day, but she doesn't mess with it. Deuce would look beautiful with or without a topknot. I hope all goes well with your surgery. |
I never clip around the eyes but I do clip the top of the head sometimes. I use a number 4 on her body when I go short and the top of the head to match. She doesn't appreciate bows and I don't have time to constantly be doing the hair. Don't go too short (you might get an afro lol) |

But I never get too close on the top of the head or I find it wrecks her look and sticks out all over. She is currently sporting a pony clip styled like a chinese crested dog (except I left her beard) so she has a big mohawk. |
It's looks cute!! But I think Deuce's hair looks finer but thicker. Even now the hair on his nose still poofs up even though I comb it down each side and his beard is longer. |

Hope I'm not too late to weigh in but I am not in support of cutting deuces top knot. Even though you may not be able to keep totally on top of grooming I think it will be easier and better- especially for the long run- not to cut the top knot or eye face beard area. The weight definitely helps keep it out of the eyes and mouth, even if it is not tied up. If you cut it, it is just constantly a little bit in their eyes and always getting in the way. I think just keeping his face reasonably cleaned and brushed- even if not tidily knotted- will be better until top knot days are back :) |
I have 2 shih tzus with top knots. I got to a point, after the groomer gave me a hard time, to just let her cut them off. I've regretted it ever since and growing it back out opus a pain...so max the New Yorker has a top knot and hopefully I never get talked into cutting it either. Have you tried those little rubber bands? Everyone's stay in place all day and I take them all out at night for comfort. They all pull on each other's top knot in bed especially if I put a hair bow in the girls hair. It was so cute this morning...everyone lined up for their hair dos and brushing. |

Just to add, your concern about the topknot hair not staying back, that issue can easily be avoided by using two rubber bands when doing the topknot. I was fortunate enough to have a nice lady at a dog show show me how to do it. The first band is for the part of the hair just in front of the ears going forward, then the second band is for the hair at the back of the head (you'd begin at the spot right where the gold and blue color meet) going forward to where the first band is at. And you'd just tighten the second band right over the first band. So basically each band has its own section or clump of hair on the head, and the second band overlays the first band so it appears as though it's one band. If you do it like that you won't have any issues at all with the topknot hair not staying back. It won't flop forward or anything at all. It just stays in place and looks real good. Also, I find it kinda strange that you do the topknot 3-4 times a day. That seems excessive to me. Is it by chance maybe too tight or not comfortable in some way and Deuce is messing with it? I just do it once every couple days, and that's fine. I'd go crazy doing it 3-4 times every day. |
I'll give the double a try and see how that works. The covered ponytail bands I use tend to slip out when he plays with his squeak toys. And he plays hard!!!! |
Your baby is gorgeous. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Sorry that your facing surgery. Good luck. |
