Need help picking out Grooming scissors
 

I am starting to study and learn how to groom my precious Yorkies and need to know from those who are in the know about good grooming scissors and thinning shears. What is the best bang for my buck?

Hi, I am not a groomer but do groom my Yorkie and my poodle. Mine has been trial and error, I'm sure others will have more tips for you. I use regular hair cutting scissors that you can pick up at wal-mart or Sally's beauty supply. I use Wahl clippers for his private area and to trim his little rump. Both the clippers and scissors service me well. Do not go out and pour $100+ in expensive scissors, you drop them once and they are done, the ones at Walmart in the hair section works well for around $13. I do not use thinning shears. I have found my brushes and combs are the most important, a rat tail comb, stiff tooth "flea" comb, pin brush and slicker brush. There is a lady on here that sales brushes and combs, I haven't ordered from her yet but intend to, I have looked at her website and she has excellent selections and great prices, hopefully someone will come along with her name for you or look under Yorkie talk sellers reviews. Mimimomo is the person Cindy is referring to. Her name is Jenny and she's a professional groomer and can answer any question you have! Her site is toplinepet.com I believe.

You will need a brush, a small comb and scissors for sure. You may not need thinning shears though. Jenny has brushes with different stiffnesses of the bristles for different types of coats.

Thank you for the feedback and I will check that website out. I have the clipper set and all that but need a set of thinning shears an good scissors.

What do you use the thinning sheers for?

The videos I've purchased use them on the nose area and between the eyes. Mainly on my little girl Yorkie where the hair is a little wild between her eyes. All the videos I've watched have shown they are the best for those areas.

I would actually suggest not to cut the hair near the eyes. Are you planning on growing out the hair and putting in a band? I know some grooming places shave the top of the nose and trim near the eyes, but when that hair grows back out, it pokes them directly in the eye. Mimimomo also sells some dog hair gel. That helps to slick the hair down if you are growing out. Once it's long enough it will lay down flat.

I use the 4" ball point scissors a lot. I trim the edge of my Yorkies' ears when tipping, trim the hair between the eyes & nose for Momo, trim the mouth hairs going into their mouth (mostly for Mimi), great for cutting little mats in sensitive areas like the arm pits, tummy area, so many uses! When it got wet, I just wipe it off & it never rusted.

The thinning shears are great for Yorkies since they have hair, not fur. It will blend the cuts & lessen the choppy look on faces. You can also use them allover their body for trims.

The curved shears are ideal for trimming around the paws, legs, faces, anywhere where there's natural curves on the dog. I use curved shears more than the straight.

I agree w/ capt_noonie. Once you cut the hair around & between the eyes/nose, you need to keep cutting. As it grows, it will poke the eyes & cause tearing which causes tear staining in most. If you try to grow it out, it takes a painstakingly (LOL) 6-9 months. If your Yorkie is silky haired, I would let it grow out.

It really depends on their hair type & style of hair too. I keep Momo in a puppy cut & keep the area between his eyes short. He has a very short snout, so it's best for him, to keep it short. He also has soft cottony hair that grows very fast & he stayed blk & tan.

:love: Beautiful! Cutting those hairs really brings out their eyes...lots of Asian style grooming cuts the hair between the eye/nose.

I agree. Grow out the hair near the eyes. It takes some time and a lot of patience but it is worth it. So glad I did.

That is about the prettiest haircut I've ever seen on a yorkie and exactly what I'm wanting t eventually get to with our 2 yorkies. We've decided to let her hair grow and hopefully down the road her hair will be more manageable.
