Grooming Help! Danny won't let me give him a bath or brush his hair without a fight. Is there anything I can do to calm him during these moments? |
I have the same problem when I try to brush my Michis hair. He goes nuts. Not too bad during bath time tho unless I spend too much time on his face. :animal36 |
Buddybear's vet just prescribed Lecithin once a day for his anxiety about riding in the car. He is 7#2oz and I'm to give him 1/4 tsp per day. I also bought a item she suggested that is in capsules. It seems expensive. $24 for 30. I might look on line to see if I can get it cheaper. She had it in her cupboard so I got the first bottle from her. It's called Zylkene. If your interested ask your vet if it's appropriate for your puppy. When Buddybear was little it took multiple times a day to comb him as he would not be still. Now he loves it when the brush comes out. He gets excited and runs to me. |
For bath, where are you bathing him? In a tub, sink, bucket? It's helpful most of the time if you put something for traction on the bottom so Danny won't be slipping. Brushing, is he food driven? If so, hold the treat for him to "nibble on" while you brush him. This will help him connect something good with being brushed. Same thing for bath. You might also try running the backside of the brush all over his body to let him know it's nothing to be alarmed about. My friend uses this trick with her pup. Seems to calm him a lot. In both instances, baby talk him. If you start getting frustrated, the emotion will transfer to Danny. Also, it would help ALOT if you tired him out before brushing/bathing. Some game of fetch if that's his thing. Or extra long walk. Patience is the key! Danny will eventually get it! Good luck! ps. What brush/comb are you using? My furbutts hate slicker brush. I use the maden brush. I'd strongly recommend getting a mustache comb as well for the face. It really helps. http://www.toplinepet.com/madan-pin-brush.php mimimomo is the owner and she offers discounts for YT members! Msg her and she'd be more than happy to answer any/all your questions! |
You can start with a small soft bristle brush, I used a cat brush just to get him use to the tools of grooming. Just lay him in your lap when he's at a very chilled moment like when he's napping and just start by letting him small and lick the bush and than lightly touching him with the brush so that he knows its nothing that can hurt him. Praising him and give him a few tiny treats too. I would suggest Cheerios' cereal, they are not filling and wont take away from his meal time. After a few times doing this than start to brush him all over including his belly and inner legs since that is a very sensitive area that gets tangles very easily and will need extra attention. Don't forget to always praise him every step of the way. Soon he will connect the quality time with you, the treats and the comforting touch being a GOOD thing !!
