Yorkie Puppy Brush Recommendation? Hi guys, I'm new here.. and I have couple of questions. I see that CC's 20mm pin brushes are recommended for yorkies.. I plan on having puppy cut on my puppy I'll be getting in 2 weeks. Should I just go ahead and get that CC's 20mm pin brush? Or should I look into something else? Is there any other brushes and grooming kit you'd like to recommend? I'm not sure where to start. Thanks :) |
Hello! Welcome to YT :). I have the CC 27 mm brush and I loooooove it! I keep my pup in a show cut though so I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the 20 mm. Other grooming essentials you may want to look into: Espree Plum Perfect Facial Cleanser Steel Mustache Comb(for knots/facial combing) CC Day to Day Shampoo CET toothpaste vanilla and mint Toothbrush(you can use a baby toothbrush you put over your finger, gauze, etc) CC Ice on Ice(for tangles) Electronic nail file(i have a Dremmel (sp?)) Baby wipes(for quick facial cleaning and sanitary wipe downs) Ok, I think that's about it lol. There are members here that sell the combs/brushes, etc and offer discounts to members. I suggest that you buy shampoo and anything else in bulk once you find one you like so you won't have to pay shipping again so soon when you run out. I have the largest container of Day to Day and it's lasted me over a year. |

so far, i've purchased: 32oz of cc day to day shampoo and conditioner, cc 20mm wooden pin brush cc 006 comb and i've just added cet vanilla and mint tootpaste and cet toothbrush as for cc ice on ice, if i plan on having its hair kept short, will i still need it? also, what do you think of cc 000 comb? do i really need it or will the brushes i have so far cover that need? |
not sure why it won't let me quote your response... but anyways... thanks for the reply! so far, i've ordered cc day to day shampoo and conditioner (32oz each.. lol) cc 20mm wooden pin brush cc 006 comb i've also just added cet toothpaste you've mentioned on my amazon cart. when i've contacted cc, they were recommending that i should get cc 000 comb and bristle brush too. what do you think? i also plan on keeping my puppy's hair short.. so is ice on ice still necessary? does their hair still tangle much? and... as for grooming wise.. (for puppy cut) what kinda grooming scissors should i get? should i just get shears or regular scissors? i'm looking into master grooming kit.. and what about the clippers? i see some ppl here uses wahl or andis.. which is better exactly? sorry for lots of questions lol |
I like the cc 001 buttercomb because all the teeth are fine and my yorkies are silky and thin coated, but the 000 is more versatile. Have you seen your future pup's parents? What type of hair do they have? If they are silky coated I would hold off on the bristle brush until your pup's adult coat comes in and you can determine which brush would be better(pin/bristle). As for the Ice on Ice, since you plan on keeping a puppy cut I'd hold off on that since you probably won't be needing it especially if your pup is silky. I use the wahl grooming clippers for sanitary areas and rounded grooming scissors for feet, etc. So as not to accidentally poke Rasta(yorkie) if he happens to move while cutting. |
3 Attachment(s) hm, i'm somehow seeing the quoted response i've put that never appeared... weird.. but i've seen pictures of the puppy's parents. i'll attach it with the post. ace is his dad and stella is his mom. other pic is picture of my baby as he was growing.. i don't have current picture yet though, but he's now 8 weeks as of today :) i asked the breeer if the puppy's coat was silky, soft or hard, but she said puppy doesn't have his adult coat in yet, so it's just puppy coat now.. (when will i know if he'll have silky coat? i've been looking at his parents' pictures for awhile and i'm not sure if stella's hair is silky lol. i think it is.. not really sure..) what kind of wahl clipper do you use? i'm looking up some and i see some that i like, but some of the response says that most of them gets really hot in middle of the hair clipping.. i'm also looking into master grooming sheers... was looking at cheap ones but some ppl say that they don't work that well either.. i'm not really sure if i should pay that much attention to amazon reviews.. lol but i guess i'll hold off on ice on ice and look into rounded scissors too. thanks! :) |
Your puppy is so cute! His parents aren't too bad looking either :p lol. You're an Amazon addict? Me too! I think I bought about 95% of my puppy/dog supplies on there except for id tags and buddy belt harnesses (I bought those from sellers on YT). These are the clippers I have. They're mid range price and cordless so I don't have to worry about getting tangled/tripping lol. Mine don't get hot, but I only use them to shave stomach hair and finish off sanitary cuts. So that's about 10/15 minutes they're on max, once you get the hang of it the less time you'll spend on it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00063...=wahl+clippers When the adult coat comes in depends on the puppy, Rasta's started coming in about 9/10 months but your boy's could be sooner. |
1 Attachment(s) honestly, i never really liked yorkies until this month. they are too small and i liked big dogs.. but when i kept looking at it, i started to like it more and more. (only puppy cut yorkies though, i still don't like long haired ones lol) so i'm not sure what to think of his parents exactly.. i guess they look... ok lol. my breeder just bought another yorkie from out of state, and that looks really pretty though. even if it has long hairs (pic attached below). i loved her face! but anyways.. yeah so far i only trust amazon.. i just tried to order tumi cloud 7 puppy carrier from petswag, but they have been ignoring my messages and didnt ship the bag like they said they would end of the march... had to go through paypal dispute and what not to get my money back.. it was such a pain in the ass... lol but i also ordered buddy belt too! how do you like it? i bought the red ones. it should be arriving soon :) as for the clipper, i was looking at the same one you showed me lol. but if i want to do to the puppy cut, will that do? i'm not sure if it'll achieve the length i want. |
I would suggest a small brush with soft bristles (I use a cat brush) to start conditioning your new pup and get them use to being touched with grooming supplies. The smaller cat brush is less scary for them and at the same time less harsh than some of the others. Once your new pup is use to being touched and can just lay in your lap while you are grooming him that is a good time to move onto one of the better grooming brushes of your choice. Just be sure to never ever use a slicker brush on your pup. Those are too prickly and hurt since Yorkies are a single coat dog with thin hair. Feel free to look over my page on grooming at Dawn's Yorkies/grooming tips. |
Those clippers will definitely work for a puppy cut, but you'll use the grooming scissors more since you'll be keeping his hair short. I groomed one of my friends yorkies in a puppy cut and all I did was put hair in between my index and middle finger and cut any hair that came out past an inch. It's hard to explain but very easy to do lol. I love my buddy belts I have rusty paw, fairy dust, dogzilla, pot o gold, venom, and golden slither :D. They're the only harnesses I'll use on my munchkins. They're addictive hehehe. What type of carrier are you looking for? Color/style wise? I really like Sleepypod mini. It's a car seat, airline approved carrier, and converts into a bed. I think they still have them on the official website as well as Brookstone(cheaper). They also have them on Amazon but they cost about $50 more on there. I was thinking of ordering another, they're really great for vet visits. Also, I have Jaraden Shacara(there's one or two left on Amazon) and a Dogs of Glamour Quilted Tote in black. I love the tote and Shacara because they look like purses and no one suspects I have a dog hehehe. They're really good on shoulders. I'll find pics and attach |

2 Attachment(s) Lastly this is the D.O.G Quilted Tote. Btw I used to make fun of my friends who all have small dogs and swore I wouldn't own anything smaller than my husband's bulldog. Needless to say I'm on my second yorkie ;). I love how feisty they are! Plus, the fact that they don't shed is amazing for a neat freak like me. ;). That yorkie in the last picture is gorgeous! |
thanks again for your inputs :) @dawn27, i definitely plan on brushing my puppy as soon as he comes home with me so he'll get used to it... lol he probably will get annoyed with me in day 1 :( I've been reading that slicker brushes are not even needed if you had some cc brush and comb so i didn't even bother getting it lol. but thanks i'll def. check out your grooming tips. been lurking all over this forum and finding out nice informations :D @colesmommy01, o.o but as for grooming..? it was easy for you? you must be good lol. i'm so scared of messing up my baby. i feel like i'm gonna make him bald or atleast make him have some bald patches. what scissors do you use? Do you know if Master Grooming ones are any good? I've also been looking into sleepy pod, but how is it when it comes to carrying it around? it is cute looking, but it looks so uncomfy since its so round.. x_x; my puppy's expected weight is 6-7 lbs.. the sleepy pod website says that for weightwise, it should hold a 7 lbs cat and 5.5 lbs dog for the mini version. Do you think I'd be able to use the mini one or should I go for the regular one if I decide to buy? I've emailed them asking but I haven't received a response yet. :/ |

2 Attachment(s) I had to bribe her with treats to stay in one spot lol but she takes up about half of the mini at only 2 lbs so I'll have to get the larger sleepypod. |
omg your puppy is cute and so tiny.. lol i think my breeder told me my puppy was 2 lbs at 6 weeks.i dont mind though. i rather have him be lil big so i dont accidentally step on him or something (my current nightmare) lol but thank you again for helping me. i think i got most of my shopping done before my puppies arrival now. :) just have to add some more scissors and process my order! i can't wait! i just came back from petco too and got some tiny clothes for him <3 he's gonna be a cute rabbit and a duck.. ahaha |
I have the Chris Christensen wooden Pin brush (both sizes), and I love them. I also have the Buttercomb 06 and 12. I love them also. I still think you will need another pin brush unless you always comb your puppy fully. A puppy often matts, and the wooden brushes don't go all the way to the skin always. Still, they are my favorite brushes. I also have a CC gold pin brush, the CC Andreas brush, and a Madan pin brush. My little girl has a silk coat, but she has a very thick coat. I brush and comb her hair in layers. I wish you lots of love, joy, and laughter with your puppy. |
What I would use on mine as a puppy was a two-in-one soft bristle brush. (It has a pokey side and a soft side.) They're made by multiple brands, and I don't think it really matters if the brush is only temporary. I would normally use the pokey side of the brush, and gently go over the pup with that to get knots out, then go over him/her with the soft side to make the pup's fur soft. (And I would spray some dog deodorant on him to make him smell nice if he smelled bad.) Of course, that's just me, and you can do whatever seems best. |
@lisaly, do you think the bristle brush would work along with the pin? cuz i'm looking to get one this week. along with 001 butter comb @disasterous, if i was to bathe the dog once a week, how will i still need dog deodorant? i was planning to use ice on ice spray throughout the week. and i heard it smelled nice too lol |
[QUOTE=Deviruchi;4549868]@lisaly, do you think the bristle brush would work along with the pin? cuz i'm looking to get one this week. along with 001 butter comb I personally like the 000 butter comb over the 001 because I first like going over the hair with wider spaced teeth to get out knots. Then the fine side of the comb will get deeper in to find more knots. You may be fine with just the #6 comb and a 000 or 001 comb and the wood brush. The bristle brush is more for finishing. It really doesn't get the deep knots. That's why I like a regular pin brush too. I don't think you need the Andreas brush. I just like it for both Katie's and my hair. My favorite comb is the 006,next is 12, and last 001. The 006 is a must have, particularly around the eyes and beard. For pin brushes I like the gold or fusion. I have the gold. Madan also makes a great pin brush, and it's much more reasonably priced. Their combs are also very good. Their mustache comb is awesome (like the 006, but a third of the price).
