hair matted and knots Help! I have a biewer rescue. I can't keep him matt and knotted free. What do you all use to rid this problem? I've tried spray conditioner. Detangler, he goes to groomers, but noticed some still there. He is very sensitive with brushing and combing. He hates it! I need advice on what to do! |
Is his coat a little more cottony? Or is it puppy coat? Teddy's coat was more prone to tangling when he was younger. He is very silky when perfectly combed, but definitely tangles, unlike Max. For Teddy, I find it is best if I keep his coat as clean as possible and not to use spray conditioners. I detangle before his bath with Pet Silk silk serum. Then I use a really good conditioner in the bath. |
He's gonna be 2 years old. I guess cotton hair. Trying to grow long. But hard with knots. |
Can't you recommend any products you have to help with this problem kristen? |
I have a young Biewer and I haven't been able to find a way to keep his coat (especially under his legs and his belly) tangle and mat free. I gave in and gave him a puppy cut the other day. Turns out, I love his hair short...lol. |

I'd hate to cut his hair! Someone plz tell me what I can use. If he would let me brush him more it wouldn't be so bad. But he hates it! He acts like I'm killing him. He seems so sensitive with his skin being pulled gently while brushing out knots. I'm at a loss! |

(I do put a towel down to keep him from slipping, and I haven't had to restrain him with a collar, but I do have a loop available during grooming in case I need it.) He also hated brushing, but with consistency and gentle, praised time, he has gotten better already. |
I think my guy hates being brushed because he was a rescue. When they got him he was badly matted and knotted. Groomer had to cut his fur where it was bad. Made him look choppy. Which explains why he seems so tender on his skin when brushing. He was also badly emaciated at the time of rescue. He's gonna be 2 and he's just learning everything right now. It was such a sad story! But he's happy and I love him! My other 2 yorkies don't have fur problems. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks Kristin ! Yes, I am owned by Galen a Biewer. Biewer coats are different from yorkie coats. His coat got knotted badly when I left him with a friend for a week. I ended up shaving him and started from scratch. I tried a lot of different hair products. . . Way too many and spent way too much lol I now use Wampum and Artero products . They are amazing. Changed his coat for the better. So much smoother. Less knots. Takes me so little time to actually brush him now. Here are the the actual products I use . . Wampum Whitening and Brightening Shampoo Concentrate Wampum Conditioning Shampoo Concentrate Wampum Limited Edition Conditioner Artero Protein Vital - Concentrated Conditioner on his face Wampum Water-soluble coat oil Wampum Miracle Grooming Spray All these items are concentrate except for the grooming spray. So you actually use very little. Lasts for a long time. I have these bottles for 6 months and bathing Galen once a week. . . I have not even gone through 1/4 of the bottle ! ! You can get these from TrendyWendyPets, LLC - Home Contact Julia. . . She is actually a reputable Biewer breeder. So she really knows the coats. You can tell her your concerns and she can tell you which items to get for your pup. She is amazingly helpful. She got me exactly what I needed. Just tell her Galen's Momma Teri sent you lol This is what I do . . Galen gets a bath once a week. I wash with one of the two shampoos, which is diluted . . If you just want to get one I would get the brightening one . .makes the white so white. . I rinse the shampoo off. Then use the conditioner which is diluted. But I don't rinse. Then I use just two drops of the Wampum Water-soluble coat oil diluted in 500 ml of water and pour over him and do not rinse either. I have to say his coat has never looked better. . So much easier to take care of. I do brush him once a day. But it is quick. And if he wears a harness for a long time I brush him again. . . I use a rotating tooth comb, a metal comb, to flea comb (for around his eyes) A Chris Christensen pin brush (bass makes a great pin brush that is a lot cheaper)and a metal rat tail comb for his top knot. Never brush his coat dry. You always use a spray. I use Wampum Miracle Grooming Spray. I put it in a small spray bottle. Easier handling. . . I just spritz his coat and use the rotating tooth comb and brush. I love this comb. Works wonders. . . Below is a picture of his coat. You can see how nice and smooth. And the white bright. Any question please ask. . . I also use 1/2 Cheerios when I groom him. Great treat. I love Biewers. Hugs |

His white fur is the most stubborn, by far. Any tips for under the legs and the belly area? They would literally mat ten minutes after grooming! So aggravating! He is young (just under five months) so I'm not sure if his coat will change much, or at all, but I would love to grow it out eventually :/ |

I get very little knots with his coat. Even with a buddy belt on. It is the products.. . I used other products and was getting knots and mats. . . He lays on his back so I can do his chest, inner legs and arm pits. Then I flip him over and do his back, legs and head. |
Cowboy Magic - dilute w/water in a spray bottle & spray generously on the matted area. I rub it in the fur & let it sit for about 5 minutes & then use my metal comb - works like a dream - :aimeeyork |
More brushing/combing tips: Teddy wasn't a fan of being brushed, so I trained him by giving him a chew to work on while I worked on him. Eventually we didn't need the chew anymore. For serious tangling, work with combs in small sections. Hold the hair section with one hand so that it doesn't tug at all at the skin. I use the tail of the rat tail comb pointed downward, away from the body, to break up tangles. Then I use the mustache/leg comb to carefully start combing the section. |
I have the same problem, Chloe knots A LOT. It gets to the point where I can spend a lot of time brushing her out and then the next day.. knots. I use Yorkie Splash and Shine Detangling Spray and it works pretty well. I heard corn starch is great but I haven't tried that yet. |
