Face cleaning Good morning everyone. As some of you know, I acquired a female breeder dog in May. (Summer) I have been growing her coat back in including her top knot and am frustrated trying to keep her face from being smelly. I do the best I can to pin back her tiny hairs growing back in around her eyes and wash her face every day with baby shampoo. (Recommended by my groomer). I notice that her face still has that smell that comes from the eye gunk. I know her teeth are also bad ( just had her spayed and a dental is next) but I am able to get that smell out of her beard. Unlike Wallee who gets very little eye gunk, she also is one who plows her face through both her food and water so her face is often wet. I wash her face right after she eats and try to dry her beard a bit with a towel when she drinks but the poor girl always has that smell to her face. Any ideas to make it smell better? |
Hi Cindy, Macy also has a smelly face and I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from until I found food stuck in her hair on her bottom lip line where her upper canine tooth overlaps the gum. It had been there for some time and had a really bad smell. I now have to clean that area every day after eating and the smell has gone away. I pour water on her lady beard - scrub in Espree Plum Perfect facial cleanser - pour water over her beard to rinse out - blot dry - then comb out. Macy doesn't have eye gunk so I couldn't figure out why her face smelled so bad. Hope you can get your little Summer smelling as sweet as she looks. |
If she has weepy eyes there can be yeast causing the red tear staining & smell. It's best to cut off all the hair that's stained w/blunt nosed scissors, to keep it from spreading. Try to keep the area dry, yeast thrives in moist places. I used to wipe their eye area several x's a day when I was growing their nose hair out. Is her hair poking her eyes @ all? You might also want to try those hamster water bottles, esp if she has long hair. I also sell the water bottle converters. |
Thanks for the tips. I am going to look for the Espree face cleaner and try to do like Jenny suggested and keep her face dry. Its really hard to tell if the hair is reddish or if it is her actual colour. Today I put her in the tub and soaked her face down well after washing it with the shampoo and then dried it well and combed. It seems to be good today and no smell. Maybe I just have to really wash and rinse away everything like that. I dont see any hairs poking her eyes as most of it is almost long enough to at least put in a barett and I am combing it all day to try to train it. |

Thanks so much again. I am going to try to get the Espree cleaner if I can find it. There is only one place around here that carries the Espree products and it is 40 miles from here. Hopefully they have the face cleaner. I noticed yesterday when I actually put her in the tub and cleaned her face and rinsed it better (I used to use a cloth) that she didn't smell all day. I guess I have to just me more thorough with the face cleaning and try to keep her dry during the day. |

I get mine from Jenny (minimomo) at toplinepet.com or you can PM her. |
Thanks so much Karen. |
I think you will like the facial cleanser. It's a foam instead of a liquid and rinses out easily. The Rain Forrest smells nice but I really like the Plum Perfect the best. Hope this helps little Summer. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks again for the tips. I am trying hard to get her hair to grow back in and it is "almost" all able to go into her top knot. Like I said, due to her colouring it is very hard to tell if she is staining or if that is just her colouring. Here is a shot I just took of her after her cleaning. lol...I am shocked I got it this good as she shys away from the camera. |

Good morning everyone. I want to thank you for recommending the espree plum facial cleaner. I managed to get some from a Ren's that recently opened near me. I love it. It makes cleaning her face so much easier. I am beginning to think that the dark spots on her face are actually her colouring. She is terrible with the water ( I can't possibly get rid of the water bowls as I have them everywhere to encourage my 4 kitties to always drink water to keep their kidneys working good). Her face is wet most of the day. If I see her drink, I try to dry it as best I can right away but again, the facial cleaner is making it at least look and smell so much better...thanks again. |
So happy you were able to get the face cleaner! I used to wipe Mimi's beard w/microfiber cloth bc she would get so much water on it, will dribble it all over. I got so sick & tired of it, just chopped it off loll. She prefers to drink from the water bottles, I think she got tired of me wiping her off every time!:p |
I am so glad you like the Epree . .it is great. Are you giving them bottle water or from the tap? |
Hi Teri My guys all get bottled water. As I mentioned, now that I have her face cleaner I think it is her colouring. Wallee has much more white on his face so I think that because she has more of the gold I was thrown. It is looking much better now. |
