Not so pleasant baths! How do your yorkies do with baths? I just gave Lola one, I do every Thursday, and she was being down right mean this time. It's a hassle every week to give her a bath and it seems like she's never going to get used to it. She especially hates when I try to wipe her face with a damp cloth, she tries to bite it and makes noises like "you better get that away from me"! It's so frustrating. |
unless she has special needs once a week is probably too often. If you wash them too much you take out all the natural oils and can dry their skin and coat. As far as getting her to like bathing use rewards. Maybe treats or a favorite toy. Show her the cloth, give her a treat, put the cloth on her, treat, and so on until she gets that the wash cloth means good things. Maybe use it dry for a little bit, just rubbing it on her and then giving her a favorite toy to play with. She will begin to associate the cloth with good things instead of getting her face washed and hopefully learn to accept face washing with a bit more grace. |
I bath my Yokie every week. Never had a Yorkie get dry skin from over bathing. Using gentle shampoo. Most important thing is good rinsing. They get use to it. |
I thought once a week baths were common on YT? I bathe mine twice a week. The baths keep my allergies from getting out of control, and Kaji's hair and skin hasn't suffered over the last 4 years. It's been okayed by my vet. :) He's just gotten use to it. He walks over under the running water. Sometimes hes helpful, sometimes he's not so helpful. :p |
I just meant for her to make sure she was using the right shampoo or it might be too often, sorry if that was confusing. |

Once a week is normal for bathing a Yorkie. Even when she is being difficult, try not to show frustration or anxiety. Try to remain calm and confident, cheerful. Where do you do your baths? We do ours in the sink with a rubber mat. Max never liked the bath tub, and it is easier on me using a sink. My boys hate the head washing part. I use a measuring cup to pour water over the head because our sprayer only has one setting and it is too harsh for the eyes. Instead of a wash cloth, I use wet cotton balls on the face. I talk to the boys the whole time, telling them what I am doing and being reassuring. They know keywords like "careful", "hold still," and "almost done," when I am working on their faces. When they resist, I tease them that they have potatoes growing in their beards and that they need their faces washed. :D We save the treats until bath time is done and follow with tons of praise, massage, and belly rubs. |
My Tatiana doesn't like baths very well. I have found that she prefers the tub over the sink. Also, found that she likes the water to be deeper than it should be. I let the water fill to about a quarter full and let her walk around a bit. I use a puppy shampoo even though she is over a year. I do a quick shampoo and a long rinse. Try using a soft, high pitch voice and talk the whole time, positive encouragement like....good girl, sweetheart, etc. She has gotten better, but still doesn't enjoy her bath. I give all mine weekly bath! |
I bath Lola in the tub. I tried the filling up the tub a little and she seemed to like that better. I will probably go back to that. I bought her some tiny treats today so whenever I bath her again I will try that too. |
I just gave her a bath, and I tried giving her treats after everything I did, like rinsing, then washing, then rinsing, etc..but she still tried to run from me. She absolutely HATES a wash cloth! This time it was worse. She tries to snap and growl at me and tries to chew on the cloth. I kept giving her treats and talking to her. She finally gave in and let me wipe her face at the end. I know it's the first time with the treats so it'll probably take a few times. It's just so frustrating! |
