Top knot is breaking his hair and leaving a red mark on his head~ Hey y'all... I have been putting Ricky's hair up in a top knot until I recently noticed a red mark/sore on his head where the rubber band sits. His hair has always been thin up there, but I've also noticed that his hair is thinning even more. Because it's so thin, I usually have to put a small rubber band in and then I put a plastic clip around it to hold the rubber band in...the rubber bands are supposed to be the non-pull kind and they are small like the kind you use for braces. I always cut them out so I don't pull his hair out. a Am I doing something wrong here?? I can't stand the hair in his eyes. He looks like Cousin It from the Adams Family...but I don't want him to have a sore on his head either. |
Others will contribute, but I'll add my two-cents. Cali's hair is very long so she has to have a top knot. For every day bands I use small scrunchies because I think they are easier on the hair. Then, at bedtime, I pull the scrunchies back a little bit to loosen it for the night and scratch her head a little bit (she loves that). The next morning I put a new scrunchie on and repeat the process. Hope that helps. Always consider if it is too tight. Good luck:D |

I have tried the small scrunchies and they don't stay in the top knot when it is thin. I have had the same problem with Tatiana's hair! I stopped using bands for a while and just bought baby barretts at Walmart. It stopped the breakage. I have to put it in quite a few time a day as they loosen and she shakes them out. Petco carries some really tiny clips w/ jewels that I used when they were puppies. It clamps around the top knot and stays in really well. The only thing is they don't hold much hair. I would completely stop using bands until the hair thickens! |
Is it possible you are pulling the topknot too tight? When you put it in does the skin below the topknot "wrinkle"? I too, have used the baby scrunchies like you show in your photo, but now I use latex bands that I get at dog shows. |

I try to loosen it up a little so it's not too tight. Below are a pic of the hair clips I've been using over the rubber bands to keep them in. They are really small, like the jeweled hair clips you can get at petco. If I don't put them in, I find the rubber bands slip out quick. |
Yes, those scrunchies are too heavy for my girl's hair. I use very lightweight rubber bands from Laineeltd.com. Do wrap the band many times around the hair so it's wrapped very tight. But don't pull the hair tight & be very careful not to pull skin into the band. (This may sound stupid, but I did it more than once when I was a "novice" & that little piece of skin lost all it's hair.) Done like this they never come loose. For a dog with thin hair I think it's important to take the band out every night, from the back with one of those little hook scissors. That's my daily routine. |
You are definitely putting the topknot in too tight. Joeys breeder warned me of this and said that eventually the area can turn black as the skin dies and no hair will ever grow in the spot. There are many bands that work, but you need to loosen them. I was told to put a metal comb between the band and the scalp to ensure there was enough space, but some people say they just use a rattail comb to loosen the band, in other words, pull the band slightly away from the scalp. |
Jenny/Mimimomo sent me some tiny scrunchies -- I think she gives them as a gift with orders of other items on her site toplinepet.com They are smaller/stretchier/less bulky than the small ones I normally buy at WalMart in the hair section. Teddy has broken off a lot of hair above his eyes, so the hair is too short to go in his topknot toward the back of his head. I use the tiny scrunchies to make a little topknot closer to his eyes to catch the shorter hairs. Then I gather more a little farther back and band that with the ponytail of the first topknot. Hoping this will help his hair grow back. It is doing a good job keeping hair out of his eyes, and these little scrunchies hold perfectly when wrapped 3 - 4 times around the tiny topknot. My guys don't like to wear the rubber bands on a daily basis. Be sure to take down the hair daily, massage the scalp, and redo the topknot. As noted above, don't do it too tight. The band should be a comfortable distance from the skin, and then pull a little of the hair in the middle to make it stay in place. |

Just wanted to say that I've been using the scrunchies for about a month now and wow...what a difference!! First off, there's no red marks on Ricky's head anymore!! But even more amazing is how accepting Ricky is of getting his hair done. Before I'd have to fight with him and now I do not and I think it's because I am not pulling his hair and hurting his head trying to get the rubber band in. It never gets tangled so it's not painful to get in and out. I do have to wrap it a number of times to get it in and sometimes it doesn't stay the best, but it's so much better for his thin hair than those rubber bands!! |
Depending upon how thick the hair is you might have to wrap it as much as four times. At bedtime I gently pull it back to loosen it and rub her scalp some which she almost purrs and goes to sleep during. Glad it is working for you. I think it is at wal mart that they even have sparkly scrunchies. |
It does sound like the topknot is pulling on the skin if you are finding red marks. I usually take the end of my metal grooming comb and slid it under the band and pull it upward after putting it in. That way I know no hairs are being pulled to tightly. I have found that the latex free grooming bands are much more gentle on the hair than the rubber ones. The rubber tends to catch those tiny hairs and break them off. Most nights I take the grooming band out and put in a tiny scrunchie to hold her hair over night. Never leave a grooming band in more than a day as the tiny hairs do start to twist around the band and it causes breakage. toplinepet.com  Amazon.com: Latex Free Dog Grooming Bands by... Amazon offers other sizes and different color bands. I find the 1/4" size works well for us. Using a good all natural conditioning spray on the hair and skin on a daily basis will also help. |
Hi everyone! My Yorkie's just turned 1 and we're growing her hair out (after having it cut short previously) so that we can put in a top knot and cute bows for her. She has really thin hair, so I haven't had much luck with a band as she stays still for a little while, but not long enough for me to wrap the band enough times to keep it in place. Plus, because her hair is thin, bits get caught in the bands and even though I cut them out, I'm wary that soon she will have even less hair. I found this product online. Has anyone tried it? Zoey's hair is thin also. I used the little bands and then put a tiny clip on the band. This did work but her hair broke and a dark spot appeared. I stopped putting her hair up and just trim it instead. The dark spot never away. |

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum! I wonder if there is a way to stimulate the hair growth on my pup, she also has very fine hair and top knots can be troublesome for that reason. I have been keeping her short around the eyes as much as possible but she really had less eye irritation with the top knot. Any suggestions on growing out the hair to obtain a top knot? Any suggestions on stimulating thicker hair growth? |

I believe strongly in using only all natural products for bathing and conditioning. The sulfate and other chemicals in many products strip the skin even though they do have some synthetic type conditioners in them. I always use an all natural detangling spray on the topknot area when combing and work it into the skin, keeping it out of the eyes of course. Genetics has a lot to do with how much coat your dog has but you can always help things along with diet and using the right products. The coat usually naturally thickens as they mature. |
Thanks gracielove, I agree with you on all natural products, including in the home so hopefully we can rule out any irritants. I have not even considered supplement for her, what a great idea! I think I will try that and also hope for the best as she matures. |
Well I think you should try to grow it if you can. But from my experience I think genetics have something to do with it. My Deuce has one heck of a head of hair and less on his legs. My daughter's yorkie has skimpy head hair and thick hair on her legs. Guess what???? You can't grow it more on either one of them. We keep them on a similar diet and they both are quite healthy. Well maybe we could oil the coats a bit but I don't think they'll grow more or get any thicker. The solution to her topknot problem . . . I cut her down to a little funky cropped do and make her statement that way. With Deuce I had to braid his hair. Of course I could have gone with a traditional topknot but what the heck. That make's his statement. |
