How to Dry a Puppy? My Fiance decided to give our puppy his first bath with us. He was really well behaved in the bath he just sat there chewing on his rubber ducky while she washed him. We got him as dry as we could by wrapping him into a puppy burrito with the towel and cuddled with him. Then the puppy terror came out when it came to dry. He would not sit still for us to use the blow dryer or brush his hair. He kept twisting and turning and jumping oddly and had us scared that he was going to end up hurting him self. Do they learn to allow this? Are there any other ways? Right now he is wrapped in another dry towel while she cuddles him waiting for him to calm down. To try the hair dryer again. Although I'm not surprised by this since the only time he barks/ growls is when the vacuum is on. He really doesn't like the evil Vacuum. Apparently the Hair Dryer is just as bad. |
Welcome and congratulations. Some do not like the blow dryer but will get use to it after awhile. You will need to get him use to brushing as they can get matted easily. I like to dry mine with a blow dryer but some people let them air dry. As far as brushing, I would keep a brush handy and when he's relaxing just calmly brush him a few times a day. |
He doesn't mind his daily brushing. Just after the bath while blow drying or between using the blow dryer would not allow it. |
Lola gets freaked out by the hair dryer, so until I can get her used it to I air dry her. Last time I dried her with a towel as well as I could, wrapped her in a towel infront of a portable heater, brushed her hair, put her fleece shirt on, then left her run around/do what she wanted. I left the heater on in her general direction until she was dry. I would have put her on the radiator on a towel but they weren't hot that day. |
I don't ever blow dry Alfie. He gets bathed three times a week for his allergies so I just don't want to add to this by drying his skin out. When he is out of the bath I pat him down, specially his ears and muzzle, then I lay out his big towel over the sofa cushions and he zooms about drying himself. He is dry in less than 10 minutes. |
Zoey does herself Well almost.....just get 2 huge fluffy towels from the dollor store , wrap them up for a few minutes in one to absorb , lay both towels on the floor , then watch them go! Rubbing an thrashing wildly in the towels is the only way to go. I have a small blow dryer nearby to hold at arms length in one hand and a pin brush in the other to try to get in a few swipes helps them dry. They don't even notice what your doing till they are about dry. They won't tangle and mat either. And it's hilarious.... |
Teddy has short hair so I just towel dry him. With Toki, I cradle her in my lap and hold her with my left arm and use my left hand to run through her hair. And I use my right hand to work the blow dryer. Toki has come to accept the hair dryer...when she was a puppy, she was very squirmy but got used to it over time. I wouldn't get her entire coat completely dry but was able to increase the time and handling the more we did it and now we can get her completely dry with the hair dryer. Definitely a two person job in the beginning. Good luck! |
Maybe try conditioning him to like the blow dryer? Put the blow dryer next to him, give him a treat. Turn on the dryer, if he doesn't react, give him a treat. I blow dry...not in the summer time tho. |
