Do you strip the inside of a yorkies ears?? I am not sure if that is the correct term for it...but with some dogs, I know you have to pluck/strip the hair out of the inside of their ears. I've taken hemostats and did it on other dogs, but not the boys. My older dog doesn't need it done, but my little guy has a lot of hair in his ear canal and i am wondering if I should be having it done with him. Ughhh....if he does have to get it done, I may take him into the groomers to do it. I just am not sure I could do it to my little guy. |
Yes, the hair should be plucked from the ear canal. |
oh yes, if not they get ear infections |
Some Yorkies do not need to have their are hairs pulled, but some do. Esp the ones that have a lot of ear hair, it can cause ear infections. You can try pulling the hair that's coming out of the ear canal, it should come off easily. All the other hairs, you can trim them w/a blunt nosed scissor. Your vet or groomer can do this for you too. |
Thanks....I was thinking it needed to be plucked. I just cut a bunch of it off so I am going to have to use some hemostats or tweezers to get them. Is there any trick to make it less painful or easier on him and/or I?!? He is already horrible when it comes to grooming so i don't want to make it any worse... He loves his ears scratched and will practically turn himself inside out when you scratch him...I am guessing because they are itchy. I don't see any mites or black gunk in there, but it doesn't mean there isn't a wax buildup. |
The hairs coming out of the ear canal does not hurt them...it comes off easily. You can pull them w/your fingers if it's not waxy & slippery. Some ear powder will help grip them, or put some flour on your fingertips. All the other hairs inside the ears do hurt them if you pull on them, so just trimming them w/bunt nosed scissors or w/a clipper (if he lets you, mine don't loll) will be best. |
I don't know if you're already doing this but I bend my dogs' ears back - it makes it easier to see inside. :) |
Thornit is brilliant for ears. Makes plucking easier & prevents or clears infections. Thornit Ear Powder - original 1907 formula from K9 Centre |
