Constantly A tangled mess... So, I've always dreamed of having a yorkie with a long coat and I finally thought I'd have my chance with the 2 year old male I recently adopted...but I see the dream slipping away one mat at a time. Heck, the little guy is even getting his nails caught in his mats when he is itching. I've groomed at a boarding/grooming kennel and I used to show cockers, which have high maintenance coats, but I have NEVER came accross a coat as bad as my Ricky's. I brush him every day, at least 2 times a day...and it seems like the more I brush, the quicker it mats back up. He can get full blown mats in a matter of hours...and it's even worse when I put a shirt or harness on him. He also gets greasy fairly quickly...even though he gets a bath once a week. He does look good for about 2 days after a bath, and then it's back to the greasy matted mess. His hair also grows much slower than my other yorkie(Princeton). I do a full groom/trim on Princeton twice a month whereas, I've only had to trim Ricky's feet and ears once in the 3 months I've had him. His coat is multi colored and it's very straight...his front half is black and his pants area is grey. I am not sure if he is still loosing his puppy coat at 2 years old and it's a puppy coat that is making him so unmanagable or what. I've shaved his belly and arm pits and last week I took the thinning shears to his coat to try to thin it out and that did help. But I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can salvage his coat. Come winter time, he is going to need to wear his sweaters here in Michigan and I just don't see how I can do it with the hair he's got, unless I can somehow tame it. |
Welcome to YT! Sounds like you might have a cotton coated yorkie, but it also sounds like you are having more trouble than most. I don't have experience with cotton coats, but have you tried a good detangler spray after bathing? Also, several people on YT use Wen with really good results. Hopefully you can get it figured out soon. I would also search the grooming threads for suggestions that might have previously been made. |
My daughter's yorkie has a cotton coat. I keep it short for her but the mats have improved with using Yorkie Splash and Shine and using a silk harness that one of the YT members sell. My boy's coat has improved since getting the harness too but he has a different kind of coat. Other harnesses would break his coat on his back. The member that makes them is Chattiesmom. They are absolutely worth it. |
I am pretty sure he still has some of his puppy coat and that is why I have been having such trouble...but I finally ended up finding a solution. I took the thinning sheers and thinned out his coat and it has helped so much. I also have his belly shaved and the tail area trimmed short. I still have to brush him twice a day, but thinning his coat has helped out immensely as it hasn't been matting like it was. I didn't want to cut his coat at all, but this was definitely a better alternative than shaving it off. Does anyone know how the adult coats usually grow in?? It looks like Ricky has grey pants on with a black t-shirt. IMO, it seems like his butt and his face are starting to grow in his adult coat first and his neck and shoulders and rib cage are all still baby hair. He is my first younger yorkie so this is all new to me. |
If he's 2 years old, he doesn't have his puppy hair anymore...by the time they're 9 months, their hair should be to the floor, if never cut. I have a soft cottony tangles easily guy & he stayed black & tan. I have to keep him in a puppy cut bc if he moves, he tangles. Plus he hates being brushed, he'll attack the brush if I encounter a tangle & he'll attack the comb no matter what, as long as it's in his sight, he'll try to bite it. I do keep his legs & tail longer, so I just cut off the tangles w/a blunt nosed scissor. Luckily, here in CA it doesn't get that cold, so he sports cute shirts in the colder months. I also grow their hair in the colder months & will shave them down when it gets warmer. I'm rambling loll! Do you use a conditioner? A heavy one would be good, but any kind will do & leave it on for 5 mins. You can wrap him in a towel & hold him so he won't get cold. |
Naughty mess Our Yorkie was a Kennel puppy, malnourished and a knotted mess.... we tried and tried to get the knots out.... We found that once we took her coat all the way down to her skin she is way better..... Also once you get the knots out always comb them before bathing them or they will knot up again and always blow dry them.... It was a hard decision to shave her, but I am so happy we did and it is growing out faster and looks amazing... Just somthing to think about.... :heart to |

I have this problem with Westley. He's cotton coated and a fluff ball, even at 2 years old. Right now his legs are matted and he won't let me touch them. I need to get him to go into a deep sleep for about an hour so I can cut his hair! |

With the ones that get matted easily, I've found it easier to just shave it and start over. You can also make a silk "undershirt" to go under sweaters to discourage matting. |

Try coconut oil, as many people tell it is good, also a spray fpr untangling and maybe improve his diet a bit?? maybe this is a case of a diet, if he had been adopted...? I also have problem with coat I dream of a lobg, silky and soft coat, now my Yorkies hair are a bit messy. I hope her hair will be nice and long in 6 months, I will post the photos on my blog Everything about Yorkies - training and raising when I will achieve success. Silk underwear , this seems interesting, I have to give it a try, but I have no idea how to do this.... |
I like the silk underwear idea. My Sophie is a mess after her daily walk and she loves her long walk. I was surprised at how tough she and how far she can walk. |
