whiskers? I have my yorkies groomed, usually just ears, feet and sanitary, about once a month. I give them a bath about once a week. My question is whether or not to trim their whiskers. Usually they are soft and blend with the mustache but Elvis have started to get very rigid. some friends say a dog needs them for scenting but I thought that was only for cats. Do I cut them or not? Thanks |
We had a recent discussion about this. I am against cutting the whiskers because they serve as a sensory device for them. I just comb the mustache with a wide tooth comb first and then gently with a mustache comb (careful not to tug the whiskers). I'll see if I can find that thread - it had some very helpful articles. Thanks. Don't know how I missed the thread. I'm rapidly becoming addicted to this site. Is there any reason that Elvis would start having more pronounced whiskers? Could it be aging? He'll be 6 in august. Izzy has very soft whiskers but I usually use spa lavis facial wash on her daily, do you think that would hepl Elvis? |
Momo has thick whiskers & a lot of them...I think it's genetics. I usu trim them to match his muzzle but have recently learned from that thread Terri linked that they use it for sensory reception, so I won't be cutting them anymore!:D |
Elvis and Izzy are full siblings. Could it be x chromosome related? I checked my female fosters and while they do have whiskers they seem to be soft but my male foster has the more harsh type. Niko is still a baby so I don't think he counts. |
Sorry, meant y chromosome. |
I don't know if it could be related to gender. That's an intresting question, though. |
