Grooming coat I am coming to the experts. I am trying to grow out Galen's coat. I have a few questions. First should I cut it down to get rid of his puppy coat or does it matter? I have been using petsilk puppy shampoo and conditioner. Should I using anything else when I brush him daily? There is so many products out there. I don't want to use too much either. His grooming. I took him to get his paws and privates done. I did not think she did a good job with his feet. She cut them too short. I was thinking maybe try and do his feet and privates myself. I am not sure how wide and high to cut his stomach area? I read the thread about feet. Does any one have any other tips that can help me? I really appreciate any help that all of you can give. I love him so much and I want to do the best for him. |
You are such a good Mommy!! I can't offer any info but am interested in your questions. Hope it's ok if I hang around. |
When I was learning to clip his belly for his sanitary, it was experiment until I figured out how far too keep him clean without clipping the whole area. As for the feet, I don't do those, I take him to a groomer, but I keep"clean feet", which means his feet are close clipped top and bottom, silky style, instead of longer on top, yorkie style. When I brush him between baths, I do not use any additional product. I don't know about cutting off the puppy coat... guess that would be preference and also depend if it tangles worse or the color looks funny as it is growing. Since Galen is a biewer, he won't go through all the color changes that standards do, right? I have always kept Huey longish and like that look. Would love to see more pics of Galen as he transitions to his long coat. Remember, hair grows back, so if you make a mistake while learning to groom, it will grow back! I had several times when Huey was so lopsided that I took him to a professional to get him evened out, but now I've gotten pretty good at grooming, if I say so myself! :D |
Instead of cutting off his puppy coat, you can snip the ends with scissors once a week or every two weeks. For feet, I stand my boys on a countertop and use scissors to cut the hair around the foot in a circle. I cut it short enough so that it can't wrap under the foot. Then I use a mustache trimmer to shave in between the paw pads. My boys didn't have much hair underneath beyond their chest area until fairly recently. I have started using the mustache trimmer to trim above their boy parts. They have a "pee string" that I keep clipped at 1/4 inch. For rear ends, I use scissors very, very carefully. |

1 Attachment(s) I was able to grow Momo's hair floor length & he has the most soft cottony tangles easily hair! So anybody can do it, this was when he was about 2 years old. Attachment 387266 In the warmer months, you can shave off their tummy area completely to keep them cooler. It won't show unless they roll over for a tummy rub. |
Momo is beautiful! Love that pic. I shave my boys' underside just enough so that it doesn't show from the side or the front, when they sit. It's hard to explain where those points are. For the chest hair, if they are lying on their backs, the long hair ends before their wee wee. I have them shaved maybe 3 - 4 inches above. In terms of side to side, it is about in line with the armpits. Looks like Galen's black hair extends a little inward toward the center of belly. I don't remember how old the boys were when their pee string developed. It doesn't need to be very long to help direct the urine downward. Their hair is growing thicker as they age, creating more of a challenge for me in trimming. |
Thanks very much. I got an Andis cordless clipper this week so I tried a little trimming. Not bad for my first time. He did not want me to do his underside but I did do some. I want him to get used to me starting to trim him. I figure if I keep up what the groomer did I should be god. He had a pee string but the groomer had cut it off. I am still waiting for it to grow back. Still nothing. |
