Best grooming clippers to get I have a Morkie and we took him to the groomers yesterday for his first all over body trim and we were not completely satisfied. We brought him home and had to fix areas and trim up the beard area ourselves as she didn't touch that area. This got us really thinking maybe we could do this ourselves. I'm just not sure what we all need to groom him ourselves. Can people tell me what they find are the best clippers to use and that are also maybe good for beginners and what other tools we will need to do all the grooming ourselves? Thanks so much. |
I don't have any experience clipping with these yet, but I am ordering them soon because I saw several recommend them. They were said to be very quiet. Anyway, wanted to share to help you with choices: Amazon.com: Andis 60105 12-Piece Easy Clip... |

Don't forget when you groom you have to pop those anal glands and cut those nails unless you take the dog to the vet. Also check the ears and keep them clean. Lots to grooming a precious Yorkie but better than some of those pet shop groomers. I just do not trust them. I have a groomer come to my home and I watch and help hold my Yorkies. No one will ever hit my dog with a brush or be mean. It happens at these places. |

However, I did want to point out that expressing the anal glands is not a necessity in all Yorkies. It should only be done if that particular pup has a tendency to need help with it (which they all don't). Mandie has never had hers expressed or had a problem with them. I know that she might in the future, but for now - she hasn't. If anyone grooming their own pup has one that needs the anal glands expressed, it is important to get your vet to show you how to do it properly or damage could occur. I guess I'm saying, just because you cut/trim your own pup, don't automatically express the glands - only if they need it and only after being trained to do so. :) Nails are a different story - they will need to be done. For those like me - take a quick trip to the vet or PetSmart lol (I'm too chicken to touch her nails with them being black..freaks me out that I can't see the quick) |
I have the Oster Pro Trimmer I purchased them at Wal mart for $16.00 I use them to trim the ears up, trim the feet pads to do the sanitary trim on Chloe and my Sheltie. They are really easy to work with being small in size. I have never taken Chloe to the groomers to be cut. I also have a pair of the Oster A5 Golden clippers with different size blades 10 and 40 and attachments for hair length, I've had these clippers for over 4 years they work well . I haven't used the A5's on Chloe because right now I want her hair long, but I did use these all the time on another dog I had she was part Poodle. (She pasted away in Oct at the age of 13 :( . I know alot of people really like The Andis but they didn't work well for me maybe I didn't get the right model. Another thought you might want to look into purchasing a DVD on grooming your Yorkie. I purchased "How to Groom Your Pet Yorkie at Home" I found this DVD very helpful. They show you different groom tools that you may need and show you different yorkie cuts. Good luck on your choices. |
Thanks everyone for all the helpful tips. And yes I was told leave the anal glands alone unless it is needed which some don't need it. If he ends up ever showing signs of needing something like that I will take him to the vets for that. I have been watching some videos on youtube but the hard thing watching those is everyone grooms their differently so then your like ok is this way better then that way. lol. Guess we will see. |
I have 2 clippers. I love the conairpet model pgr44. No skin irritation at all and very quiet. I lost that one for a while and got another on line. Oster trimmer model 78996. I am not nearly as happy with . That one pinches and causes razor rash. |
Clippers :) I used to Groom Dogs in the 70's and I am STILL using my Oster Clippers and they STILL work fine on my Yorkie for 3 years now. I used to cut my Son's hair and my Husbands hair with them also for years in between and trimmed up our Golden Retriever. I have never had them sharpened. I will get another pair of Osters when the motor wears out in this one although they are expensive, they are well worth it. They don't have the Model that I have anymore after all these years but they have served me well. |
