Thinning Shears and Curved Shears...where to buy?
 
I am learning to groom our two Yorkies myself. I've had good success with the bodies so far and am getting more confident. I plan to start trying to do their faces and I've been watching some YouTube videos on how to get the round "teddy bear" look. The most consistent thing I've noticed across videos is the use of 42-tooth thinning shears and curved shears.

I've done a quick search of the internet and primarily Amazon, but the variations in reviews and price are so wide that I got a little overwhelmed. Do any of you experts have a good recommendation on which brands are best and where I can buy them? I'm extremely hesitant to spend $80+ bucks on a pair of scissors in case I chicken out...but I can't seem to find a less expensive pair (especially of the thinning shears). I can find 30-tooth shears at a more reasonable price, but it jumps dramatically for the 42-tooth sets. Is it really worth the extra money?

Millers Forge makes a great 46 tooth thinning shear and it's got great reviews...I bought them myself about a month ago and it's the best price I could find then.

Try Pet Edge. I'm fairly certain that's where I found both of mine. The best advice I can give is buy the best quality you to can. The finer toothed thinning shears will give you a smoother finish.

Good luck & remember, it's just hair & will grow back if you mess up. Just aim for a little longer than you really want. :)

I found my curved shears at Petsmart and I think they also had thinning shears. You can also order them from PetEdge... Wholesale Pet Supplies, Dog Grooming | PetEdge.com Be prepared though, they are a bit awkward to use until you get used to them and until you learn just how your dog's hair lays. What I 'think' it should look like when done isn't always the case :rolleyes: but, I'm still learning and hair does grow back!

Well, you know how the internet is...I got started in one place and ended up in Timbuktu by the end. :) I probably spent two hours watching videos. Some that I found most helpful were these:

- Shih Tzu
- Shih Tzu
- Poodle

I figure Shih Tzu fur is pretty similar to Yorkie fur, so I could extrapolate and the guy with the poodle just did a good job explaining about the use of the thinning shears, which I'd never thought of using before.

Thanks so much for the advice so far guys! I will definitely check out PetEdge. I've never shopped there. I may just have to bite the bullet and spend the money...but right here at post-Christmas/Tax Season, money is tight! I don't want to end up wasting money because I bought a cheap product and then had to go get the expensive one anyway, though. And eventually, it will pay for itself because I won't be paying for two grooms every few months.

Master Grooming Tools 5200 Series from Pet Edge are Great!!!! I've been using shears on Riley since I brought him home. I just recently bought a pair of clippers but haven't really used them a whole lot yet. I still prefer to use the shears. I use the thinning shears for his chest and beard areas.

I have the master series 5200 both in curved and thinning. They are fabulous! And very very sharp. I think I ended up with six band aides the first time I used them! lol

One more thought...you could skimp on the curved but do not buy cheap thinning shears. Trust me...they do not work and are a complete waste of money.

Does anyone know if Petedge offers a discount or coupon to YT members? Would love to attempt grooming myself but am surprised how expensive it is to get the right grooming tools to start. I know in the long run it could pay off but it's tough upfront. :(
