Brushing/Combing I know this may sound silly but this morning I was thinking about all the posts I've seen where people ask about how to get knots out. (THAT made me think about the possibility that not everyone has long hair for themselves or maybe never brushed long hair before.) A Yorkie's coat is very much like our own heads...when you brush them be sure to start from the loose ends & work your way up to the scalp; making sure to separate about 3" sections ensures you'll get a really smooth brush out. I brush, then comb until perfect. Of course, the first thing Tuffy does when I'm done is shake! Anyone else have tips to share? Please feel free... |
what do you do about static this time of year? |
I use conditioner and by the time Blazer starts getting staticky, it's time for his next bath! =) It is true, I have always had long hair and my three daughters all have very long hair and I treat Blazer's hair as I do ours. I wash, condition, and comb it out to keep it in its best condition. |

I have long naturally curly hair so I only use a funky looking comb on wet hair only. My yorkies I comb first then brush with slicker then a soft brush .with Sadie conditioner gets rid of static but suri tukka and tiny have different hair so I use a bounce dryer sheet just rub it on their hair and no static . |

I think the slicker brush works good on Joels cottony hair:) |
Thanks for all the info have used the dryer sheet even on myself have very long hair Pups have long hair so when a sweater or coat come off they are very staticy so must remember the dryer sheet LOL:D |
Gracie's coat is long. I always use a 6" Maden comb to comb her out in the morning. She tends to like to sleep under the covers so she is a bit messy in the AM. After I have all the tangles out she gets brushed. For her at least, brushing first tends to be too harsh on her coat. I always use a conditioning spray on her ends as I groom her. In the winter months she needs that even more. I have never cut down any of my long haired dogs. I don't mind doing the daily grooming. If you keep up with the coat it does not take very long to keep it looking nice. |
These are my first Yorkies they are now almost 2 1/2 yrs and 3 1/2 yrs I only have cut what I call bangs on my girls one has cotton hair one has silk:D |

Great advice about brushing and combing. I remember watching my father brush Max's hair for the first time. He started at the top line and pulled really hard. Poor Max dutifully stood still for grandpa. Obviously dad had never had long hair and had no idea how to brush it. :p |
Joel also likes to shake and rub on the floor when I fix his hair, but what I found that works is when i'm done I quickly get him treats and distract him with doing some tricks and after that I open the blinds so he can look out the window and he is too distracted, so he hasn't even been messing his hair up. |
