5 month old, second groom and they've suggested "something to calm her" Clover is 5 months old and today went to have her second grooming session. When we arrived to collect her the groomer said she's done all that she could for us but she's to wriggly! She then suggested "getting something from the vet to calm her" She's ony 5 months old and has only been twice! We regularly brush her at home and also bath her every two weeks! We don't want to sedate her at all, any suggestions or shall we find a new groomer? |
I personally would look for a new groomer. I have a groomer who comes to my home who has been working with Wallee so the experience is not overwhelming. He does great and is becoming less wiggly as time goes on. I get her to come once a month even if it's just a small trim so he gets comfortable with the process. He is now almost 9 months and she says he is a pleasure to work with. |
Yup are do it yourself. It really isn't that hard if you can brush and bath her. You would have no problem. I do all of mine. And it saves money. I am not good at nail trimming but my daughter does that. Good luck |
Clover is young. One thing you can try to do is to sit down on the floor with a few treats and a brush. Let him smell the brush. As you start to brush him talk to him in a calm voice using the treats to give him some focus. Let him smell the treat while you brush him. You are not going to brush him fully. Just part of him. Just to let him get used to it. Do a little everyday. He will start to get used to it. He will stay longer and longer and you will be able to brush him fully. I would find another groomer though. Like suggested maybe a mobile one. Good luck |
I've used a lot of groomers in the past when I had poodles and never had one suggest that. I personally would never drug a dog for regular grooming, much less a puppy. I'd keep looking for groomers and ask about how they handle a wriggly puppy and then you might stick around to observe how the groomers as well as the assistants and handle other dogs. Just sitting and watching for a good while will show you a lot, though they are all very aware there is a client watching. Still, you can observe things you want to know if you sit there long enough since some of their reactions to a dog's actions are instinctive and reactive, done without thinking in the course of time. Personally, after finding skin nicks and such, the dogs coming home and sleeping the rest of the night, etc., I began to do my dogs myself and now I don't have to worry about their well being at the groomers. |
I would never drug a dog for grooming/ I would get a new groomer |
new groomer......or do it yourself. shes a baby of course she isnt going to want to sit still!!! |
I'd suggest the groomer needs sedating, obviously she has the issues if she can't handled a little wriggly yorkie. |
I'd get a new groomer. She obviously doesn't groom a lot of puppies. My groomer was able to groom my two 5 month olds and they were wiggly. She said they will eventually learn as they get older, they're just puppies. |
I would definitely be finding another groomer! My Shi Tzu was a major nervous Nellie when it came to grooming, and I still never had it suggested to sedate her. It sounds like your groomer needs more training. |
I'd agree with most others - either find another groomer or do it yourself. Though I do the majority of the grooming on our two, twice a year Jack goes in for a shave - not sure what we are going to do with Izzy yet, she is still a baby (7 months) and we are just letting her hair grow. But I do regular baths on them and try to do their nails (Jack is much better at being still than Izzy - its a work in progress). Good luck! |
I agree with the others. Get a new groomer. I would never sedate my baby unless she needed it for surgery. No way. |
Oh I vote for a new groomer...........she is a pup and pups wiggle. Good Luck! |
I would look for a new groomer. I do Riley myself... Started working with him Shortly after he came home. He Lets me do anything to him... Sometimes I will do different sections over a few nights but it eventually all gets done. |
Do Not drug this precious little dog! When my groomer came to groom my JoJo he was very wiggly being a pup. She would only do a little at a time. Not even approach with clippers. Too scary. The little dog has to get used to this treatment. With alot of love and patience, my JoJo now sits in the tub and is so good for the clipping. Get a groomer that understands puppy behavior. One that is not in a hurry to finish. Only have her do a little bit at a time. Yorkies are too sweet to drug up and be zombies just for a groom!@ |
