Doesn't like grooming :( My yorkie is four months old and he absolutely hates to be groomed or even handled by the vet for shots, ear checks, anything! The vet couldn't even check his ears this past visit and it took us ten minutes to get him still enough to get his shots :( When we first got him he was sick and among other things had a very bad ear infection. For two weeks we had to clean his ears and use antibiotic ear drops. He would freak out during this too so in order to keep him still I had to wrap a blanket around his body, then he would hold his head still and let me get to work. I am covered in scratches from him and I don't know what to do :( |
Have you asked the vet about giving him something to calm him down before bringing him in for a visit? As far as grooming, mine do not like to be groomed either but I just try and brush them a little each day and give them a treat after. He is still young and as he gets older and settles down more he may not be so hard to handle. Also, the thunder shirts work with many dogs, one of mine included to calm them down when they are stressed. Good luck. |
I had to train Joey to like grooming, and I believe it's good to do a little each day, several times a day, with a few cherrios. I would rather he not be perfectly groomed and learn to enjoy it then hate it for life, so much of my grooming in the early days was "pretend grooming." I don't think any dog likes eardrops, they feel funny and most dogs don't like the vet, but your little guy had a difficult start, but I think you can train him to think it's not so bad, just don't do any type of grooming that hurts him, and lots of treats! |
Attention span is short I am a groomer. I can tell you that a four month old puppy likely having his first grooming is going to be a squim worm COMPLETELY! PATIENCE IS THE KEY! Trust me! I always book a 3 hour session for first time groomers. It is scary for a pup to have all these things done at once so be patient, I always put a dag of peanut-butter on their nose or on the grooming arm to keep their attention. Play with his feet often and cut his nails often, use sights sounds and feels that he would be sunjected to at a grooming salon and in no time your baby will be fine :) |
Great advice from everyone above. Max was a squirmy puppy when it came to grooming. I trained him by waiting until nap time, then I would put him on my lap and massage and pet him for a little while until he was completely relaxed. I would then start combing him gently and continue petting him, talking to him softly, praising him. Eventually I tied grooming to going outside for walks. Max knows he has to have his hair combed before we put on his harness. Be calm and confident when you groom or take your pup to the vet. Dogs are very smart and will pick up on your anxiety. Practice several times a day and touch your pup all over from ears to toes so that he will accept being touched. Praise and give rewards. He will get the hang of it. :) |
Took my Yorkie about 3 years to become completely still for grooming. At 4 months old, he is still very young. Just be patient and do whatever you need to do patiently and time will make him used to it. |
