For those that groom your pups at home I've had Sophia and Brody groomed professionally once, and although they did a nice job I wasn't 100% pleased. So I've decided (for now) I want to groom them myself. Sophia has very fine hair and doesn't require much. I've been fine with trimming the hair on her nose (I cheat, I do it when she's tired :p). Brody has tons of hair, and I tried trimming him on the kitchen floor. It didn't go so well - both pups were trying to eat the cut hair!!! Where do you groom your pups? I've been afraid to do it on a table, because Brody can get feisty and I don't want him jumping off and getting hurt!! |
I trim Jada and Bogie on the kitchen counter now, but they both will stand still for me. When I first started doing the grooming on them myself, I put a vinyl tablecloth in the floor and trimmed them there. I never had a problem with them getting into the hair. Maybe put one of them in another room while you are doing the grooming. Good luck it does get easier the more you do it and you will find what works best for you. Once I tried keeping the shop vac handy thinking I could vac up the hair as I went...bad mistake:eek: My two love attacking the vacuum cleaner so it was a holy mess of hair flying everywhere:p |

I put my two on the dryer when brushing or trimming. Think any flat surface should work. Don't think they would be still on the floor. |
I have a table top grooming stand that I put on the bathroom counter. It works pretty well. |
I groom Tatiana at a certain spot in the living room (floor). It's near an outlet (to plug in the clippers) and it has good lighting. We have hardwood floors, so I just sweep up the cut hair when I'm done. I don't like grooming Tatiana on a tabletop either. If she hears something outside, she would fly off the table to investigate. |
Seems mine were trained to be groomed on the kitchen table. I always keep one hand on them or I grab a fist full of hair if I have to look away for any reason. If I have to get up to get something, the dog goes with me, or we take a break and I put him/her on the floor. Once I did Peek A Boo on a stool, the seat turns around so I thought it would be easier.. He was so comfy he fell asleep, went to roll over... then he fell off the stool! I thought he was awake at the time. So now I always have a hand, literally, on their little body. I was doing Finny on my ironing board, and she went off the other side of it. I had a handful of hair though and gently lowered her to the floor as she was trying to bite me for pulling her hair. We made up right away... she's not used to any rough treatment and was just trying to protect herself. I felt so bad, but glad that we avoided any broken bones! I don't trim nose hair, I let it grow out. I only trim their ears, allover length, feet and butts, and I shave their tummies. Just be careful, and expect the unexpected! |
I've groomed mine at home all these years. I do it on a table top but I don't restrain them. I finally finally finally found a delightful groomer and David gives my dogs scissor trims! He is just awesome! I no longer have to do it, and I'm happy!! |
We have a small pub table used to be the breakfast nook but is our only dinning table since we convertes the dining room to both a dining and living room... Anyways its typical pub style tall and small. I covered it in industrial plastic sheeting stapled under the bottom (easy clean up amazing!) I know my dogs are too scared to jump off it as it is so tall. Getting a grooming arm that attaches to the table is a later goal as of now we just always have two of us and attach a leash to a secratary desk handle next to the table its so rigged up but it works for now. I have a cloth display spinner from an old retail business I had and the dogs sometimes stand on that. |
Wife is use to do hair for a living. But all the chemicals didn't agree with her. She has always cut the dogs hair little at a time. Like just the ears one day. the maybe the toes, or privates. That back ect. Doing this while they are a pup. But the time they are full grown they are use to it. Then they will sit for a full hair treatment. She uses scissors, grooming trimmers and big trimmers depending on the cut. Just work your way up to it. They will let you do anything it you do it slow and little at a time. I groom both of mine on the ground. I sit down and they sit between my legs. I don't have to restrain them and they don't eat the hair, but if you are having issues... I would just have one in the room at a time so they don't rile each other up. Good luck! They just need to get used to it and they will accept grooming time :) |
