Question about growing out the coat Hello there, Milo is one years old and I have been growing out his hair. However, it seems to be growing super duper slow. In fact, I feel that it really hasn't grown for the last several months. Someone mentioned that you have to wrap or band their hair for it to grow full length. Is that true? If so, why does that help the hair to grow? If I don't wrap or band the hair, will it not grow? The mustache and beird is still not that long and the length on the side doesn't seem to be growing. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you. |
3 Attachment(s) I have never wrapped or used bands on my girls. Rosie has the long hair. Beard and all. :D:D I just use good grooming products and let it grow. I brush them both often. Don't know if that helps or not but figure it can't hurt. :D Mikki grows on her body but her face area doesn't seem to grow out much. Here are some pictures. Rosie is in the first two and the last is Mikki. Attachment 373171 Attachment 373172 Attachment 373173 |

Facial furnishings and the skirt are not uncommon to be slow in growing. Sometimes you just have to be patient and then there are those coats that simply never want to achieve floor length status. Being just one year old, I think, is probably more of the problem than you not wrapping his coat. For the healthiest coat possible you need, good nutrition and good grooming practices. The coat has to be kept clean and that means a bath 1-2 times per week, depending upon Milo's activities. If he goes outside to play much, probably 2 bathes a week is what you'll have to do. You need to brush or comb out tangles each day. Remember to never brush a dry coat, get a conditioning spray, or make your own with a small amount of a good hair conditioner, diluted and mixed in a spray bottle of water. |
I think it's genetic. Some yorkies just seem to grow hair MUCH slower than others. ZoE has very slow growing hair (...and of course, I love a long coat...). ZoE is 1yr & 8 months and her coat is still short. My last yorkie, Chelsea, had a floor length coat by 1 year old. I trimmed Chelsea at every other bathtime to keep her hair off the floor and neat. I hardly ever have to trim anything on ZoE...just her ears & feet. |
A few important factors with growing coat are diet and coat care. Make you are feeding a high quality food. Also you need to keep the coat and skin clean and combed out. Weekly baths and daily brush and comb outs will definitely help. With that said, you also need good grooming products that work with your dogs coat. |
