Grooming for show Hi guys ! I am new to the world of showing. I have a handler but would like to show my boy myself. Any tips on how to get his coat looking silky and gorgeous ? What products do you like best ? What should I steer away from ? |
bumping this for you, someone here will give you some tips. |
it would be better if you went to some shows and got to know some of the show people, watch them grooming their dogs, get to know them and ask questions. everyone has different things they use, every dogs coat is different and what works for one may not work for another, so you need to figure out what will work for your dogs coat. Most all the show people are willing to talk with you (after showing) and willing to help. I know there are several show in the Fl area, you can look up some that are close to you. Does your handler groom your dog now? |
My friend who has kennel uses Iv San Bernard for long coated dogs. Her yorkies have nice silky coat. For one of my yorkies I like CC Day to Day, but I was told their new Spectrum Line is better :D But maybe you should ask your handler for advice? |
I don't have a show dog, but when Fido had long silky beautiful floor length coat once I used Vellus products on him, he looked sooo gorgeus ! I reccomand Vellus :) I but shampoo on the coat and rinse twice, and then I put the conditioner in (I mix the shampoo and conditioner with water), I just squeeze the conditioner out of the coat, I never rinse it, the coat becomes more glossy and looks better I think if I don't rinse the conditioner :) It's completily OK to leave it in the coat. Also, I just use a pinebrush (brush for humans made with pig hairs) and a steel comb, I also use combs made of hard plastic or even wood, but steel is the best I think. Also, I use static spray to spray over the coat when I brush, if it is dry then, never brush dry coat. When the dog is about 8 months, you have to start wrap :) or when the coat is long enough. |
I am somewhat new to showing. I did finish my first champion at the end of 2011 and am working on my next. What I can tell you is that you will get a different answer from each person you talk to! I've pretty much tried them all. I will say that no shampoo or conditioner can make up for good genetics. It really does depend on what kind of coat you have.... plush puppy is one of my favorites but i like IOD and right now i'm using CC and that seems to be good too... |
