How often to bath ? The girls are now almost 6 months old. Gosh how time flies. I wondered how often I should be bathing them. At present I do this once a week. I only bathe the other older dogs ( different breed) every couple of months they have realy short thin hair. Molly looks realy scraggy and I wondered if I'm bathing too often. I use puppy shampoo and cream silk conditioner. It's pet head brand I think. I know there are a lot of different opinions to this so will be interested to hear. |
I think once every 1-2 weeks is fine. Depends on the dog and it's habits though. Ones that go for a roll in the grass everyday may require more frequent baths, than one who runs out to potty but hates the grass. |
Maybe try using diluted conditioner... sometimes full strength can cause a scraggy look about them... also depends on the condition of the coat... a drier coat will handle more/thicker conditioner. For a normal-oily coat, use less conditioner, or leave it set for a shorter amount of time. |
Jaeger is 6 months old and has really dry skin-I use a petco brand leave in conditioner (probably will switch to something better after it runs out) and petsmart puppy shampoo. I was bathing him every 2 weeks but the vet said that was way too often. Not quite sure what to do either. |
I try to leave it to once a fortnight as if I wash them weekly their hair gets too dry . I use a little baby powder spray in between to keep them smelling fresh. I can't believe that your babies are 6 months already !! |

I had Lottie done but don't know if I did it too early . I did it before her first season but since been told that is why she is a shy as was not mature enough! But vet recommended it so that's why we had it done. That probably no help to you LOL :D Are you near Hogganfield Loch ? There was a sponsored Yorkie walk there today for the Yorkie rescue group. |
I TRY to bathe every couple of weeks...my new little guy has very dry skin...kinda looks like dandruff...I just bought pet silk oatmeal shampoo...i am hoping this helps him. I have 3 so bath time is quite long for me...gotta do it when I have no plans of doing anything else! LOL |

I have just ordered EQYSS shampoo leave in conditioner and detangle spray. Found this on an equine website but can Use it for dogs and humans ? |
I don't know if you could you use it or not. Try this website for some good shampoo they sell a lot of the show dog products. HUB International (Mr & Mrs G Urquhart) HUB Int. Catalogue |
Sometimes they look oily quickly if the shampoo or conditioner is not rinsed out completely. Other than that, you'll get diferent opinions on bath frequency. Kaji is bathed at minimum once a week. He never looks dirty, or smells too bad. His skin and hair are healthy as far as the vet has told me. |
I bathe all of mine once a week. I find that dry skin is best dealt with by frequent bathing. I use Bio-Groom products. The groomer recently used Les Pooches for mine so I have some on order. I also like yorkie spash and shine. |
Mine get done every 7 day's. |
For the most part, I like to bathe once a week, and if you use a good quality shampoo, it shouldn't be too drying for the skin. I am trying out some new shampoos and conditioners with Kate, but I used a cocoa butter and mink oil shampoo for seventeen years on Ashley. It used to be made by House of Anju, but it was bought out by Jerob many years ago. It seems expensive, but it is so dilutable that it last a very long time, especially since I buy it in the gallon size. It is so conditioning for the hair and skin, and it's great for dogs with skin allergies or dry skin. From one of their descriptions of the shampoo, it says: "Exhibitors, Groomers and Veterinarians have found that this product has eliminated many skin prroblems such as "hot spots" and excessive itching. Animals that have had "allergic" problems with other products have used Cocoa Butter & Mink Oil Shampoo with no reactions.' Jerob Cocoa Butter and Mink Oil Shampoo | Jerob |
My yorkie had really dry skin and his hair was really thin and stringy, I was bathing him once a week. My vet told me that was entirely to often unless he gets dirty I should only bathe him once every 3 to 4 weeks since I've cut down on bathing him his coat is much fuller and his skin is not near as dry. |

I think it depends on the dog. My boys would be a disaster if I let them go more than 10 days without a bath. They are in full coat. Their coats and skin were drying out recently, so I started them on a fish oil supplement that cured the problem. There are so many variables when it comes to healthy skin and coat: diet first and foremost, grooming products (conditioner is a must for us), activity and so on. |
Hi there...I bathe both of mine one a week..dont like them looking *narsty*. They would if i let them go longer than that. I use Bio-groom products...great stuff, you can order it online. |
I bath once a week as Ellington really needs it. I only shampoo, don't use a separate conditioner, as I use a conditioning oatmeal shampoo (for itchy skins). It leaves him fluffy and clean. As he works with me at my hair salon, his hair gets quite greasy. |
We bath every Thursday night or more if needed. We use wen. |
