Grooming Nightmare We took our Yorkie to the groomer for the first time. Our other 3 Yorkies have gone there since they were puppies w/o any problem. Because it was his first time he was only there for a hour and he didn't get any extras like teeth brushing. He did have some matting so he had to be shaved in some areas. Anyway that was yesterday. Here is what has been happening: He has been acting like a totally different dog. Normally he is very hyper, he loves to play, and normally doesn't really like to be held that much. Since he has gotten home he wants us to hold him nonstop. Even when we play ball with him he will barely leave our lap to get the ball. If the ball is too far away he won't get it at all. It is almost like he thinks we are leaving. He also seems to be afraid of his tail. He never was before. If there is a loud noise he starts shaking. It is very sad. He is acting like a totally different dog. Sorry this is so long. Does anybody have any suggestions? Has anybody else experienced something like this? |
Check his rear end. If he is acting like he is scared of it, and just went to the groomer, chances are it hurts because they clipped or shaved to close to it. Is it red or inflamed? |
My Miss Mini often acted like this after a grooming...kind of like a foreign body to them..pardon the pun! Give him a good once over and check for any injuries, razor burn etc., if all seems well give him a couple days to get use to it...:) |
My smallest one had this issue with her rear after our vet expressed her anal glands....when they did this it irritated the area somehow a bit, and it really bothered her for 2-3 days...then she was fine and back to normal. My other dog's rear was bothering him after leaving the groomer, and they actually didn't fully express his glands enough to empty them. Oh and btw, this was also her first time since I have had her that she had this done..so it might just have been new to her also.....wondering if they expressed his glands? |
he is asleep right now so i am going to check his rear end in the morning. I am also going to call the groomer and see if they did his anal glands. After I posted this he did start rubbing his butt on the floor so I think this might have been what scared him. He also started playing a little bit before he went to sleep. I hope he is doing better in the morning. It has been very sad seeing him so scared. |
Well he seems a little better this morning. Everything looked fine on his rear end. He still wants to be held a lot but he is atleast sitting in his bed alone. I guess he just got scared to death when we took him to the groomers. I guess next time we will stay with him. Also all of his puppy hair is gone so he will not have to be shaved. |
Having the hair clipped from around his rectum, allows air to reach his little butt, where he has never felt air before...same thing when they do ears, and tummy, etc. They are getting a "draft" where there has not ever been a draft felt before and it can make them a little goofy! Hair removed from between paw pads, allows pads to touch the floor where before, pads were covered by hair, so it feels different! So if you look and dont see any razor burns or any damage or injury, it may just be they can feel a draft on areas that have had hair covering the area before! |

My karleigh always acts a little diffrent after grooming, usually with in 2-3 days she is back to normal, i always ask her not to shave her private areas anymore as she will scoot & lick for a day. hope your little one feels more like him self soon . |
Is your little man back to acting like himself? I certainly hope he is feeling better!! |
