Nail Trimmers/Files/etc 1 Attachment(s) I always say I am going to up-keep with Jackson's nails and then never do. They never get too terrible - but I'd like to "train" them to be shorter (I think I read that if you trim little bits more often, then you will be able to cut shorter... or something along those lines...) He gets professionally groomed approx. every 10 weeks or so. He got them cut pretty short while he was under for his dental in November and I noticed that helped a lot, they did not seem to grow as fast. I do have some basic nail clippers, kind of like these: Attachment 362720 But I did not know if there were any products that made it more simple, or made it so I can't really easily cut into his quick. I am NOT good at cutting his nails because he moves his feet too much and then I get worried about hurting him, etc. So I was looking at something like this: Bamboo Perfect Paws Dog Nail Trimmer at PETCO but did not know how successful those things are. |
I cut ZoE's nails with people toe nail clippers. They're cheap and I throw them about when they start to dull, so I always have a sharp set. I've handled her paws since she was 6 weeks old and she has no issues with me cutting her nails at all. A friend gave me a nail trimmer/filer similar to the one you pictured, for Christmas. ZoE doesn't like it at all!!! Just checked...I have the "pedipaws" kind. Horrible. Just the sound of it freaks her out, but then as soon as it goes against her nail...pure craziness (imagine holding your nail against a belt sander to file them....). |
My boys hate the Pedipaws too. Those things are good as a nail file for rough and ragged nails, but it would take forever to make any significant difference in nail length. My nail trimmer of choice: walking on rough pavement. :D |
I don't have any advice but wanted to share that I finally trimmed Riley's nails all on my own a couple of weeks ago. I could not believe it... I didn't think I would ever be able to do it. He laid on his back while I did his back ones.... and he totally let me do his front paws also. Will save me some $$ for sure!! |

I just know I could train Jax to tolerate it but have been lazy. I guess I need to work on it... I did not know you could use human nail clippers. That seems like it would be easier to just trim the tips off every week or two. I don't like those dog nail clippers. |
:) I was really nervous..... and wasn't sure what to expect.... but once I did a couple and got the feel and sound of the Snip it wasn't bad. I just did a teeny bit of the tip, so I will probably need to do them again, soon. I brought the clippers around Riley for a couple of days, for about 15 mins. at a time....before I tried to do anything. He had a bad experience at the vet's office once where they clipped too close to the wick..... and at first he was showing his teeth at them. That's why I'm so surprised he let me do them. But he lets me do anything to him. I would rather do it than have him uncomfortable with someone else. |
Peanut will not let me clip his nails :thumbdown I just run him in to the vet or run him into his groomer- He also needs his anals done monthly so it works out for me :D |
