Best detangler What do you think is a really good detangler please? Both for brushing out knots & for helping prevent them. I've owned lots of long haired dogs, as well as Yorkies, but I've never, ever had one as bad as one of my current little ones for tangling up. He gets brushed & combed every day but I only seem to need to turn my back & he's tangled again! I don't know what he does overnight....bed head hair isn't in it! He has a long coat & I don't really want to have to cut it short as he looks gorgeous when it's right, plus it's cold & he feels it. I'm currently using Ice on Ice but wondered if there was anything you thought better as it doesn't seem to be keeping it that smooth. |
My Rosie has the long hair as well. I tried the Ice on Ice too. It was ok, but just not exactly what I wanted. The best I have found is Yorkie Sheen. I buy the large container to fill up my small container. And a little bit goes a long way. You can get at Yorkie Sheen - Yorkshire Terrier Detangler / Coat Conditioner It also has a nice scent that seems to last longer than any of the others I have used. |
Any good human hair conditioner, watered down makes a good detangling spray. I also use Crown Royale detangling spray....don't think it works any better than the above mentioned, but I do like the scent and the concentrate bottle has now lasted 3 years. |
Thank you for the suggestions. Yes, I find the Ice on Ice just doesn't seem to help much too. I'll see if I can find a stockist over here. |
I use Top Paws ~ Detangling Spray with Kelp and Alo Vera... It provides extra shine and manageability. $7.99 at PetSmart |
I use a dab of Pet Silk Silk Serum for detangling on Teddy. A lot of people like Cowboy Magic or simple corn starch (apply dry to dry hair). Anything that gives the hair a little slip. I use Vellus Anit-Stat for general brushing, but I am always on the look out for a good spray...and I am going to be trying a few new ones soon. |
1 Attachment(s) This is a really good tool for getting out tangles. There are several types, just be careful not to get the one that has sharp razors. Those ones will cut the hair. Not to be confused with the de matting/de tangler type. Also very important to only use it on wet hair like after a bath or wet by use of a spray bottle. |
Coat Handler is also good. |
Thank you for all those suggestions. I'll see which I can get, you seem to have a much wider selection than we do here. |
My yorkie never matts but my maltese is just like your little one. I brush her and she just goes out and run and comes back nicely matted :( I use cowboy magic to get any matt out. It also helps in preventing matts. It is a horse product but works so good with my girls cottony hair. |

Yes, I think a shop I sometimes order from by post stocks it, though none of any local ones do. |

Hi, I have 3 dogs in very long coats at this time I'm using Wow from Laser Lites, it is a great conditioner for daily brushing and getting out the mats, I add also 1-2 caps in the final rinse it is a great help. I'm using also K9 Competition. I would like to try Cowboy Magic but I still can not find it. Have a nice day! |

You want to use a good quality pin brush (no balls @ the end) & or comb to work out the tangles, together w/line brushing. Those not familiar w/line brushing, start w/one section of hair, grab the hair & lift it up, brushing downwards in layers starting from the bottom working your way up. Brushing this way ensures you get all the hair smoothed out. I've found any 'conditioning' spray on the market works fairly well. CC Ice on Ice has silicon agents to coat & protect the hair from dirt & urine, so there can be build up & actually cause more tangles on dirty hair. |

I'll get some when I'm next in town. |

The mat splitter is a big no no for silky yorkie coats, and basically any coat that you want to keep looking good. I only really use it on big hair dogs that have managed to turn their rear end furnishings into a natural disaster. Line brushing is the best way to ensure you have a tangle free coat. Ice on Ice, as well as a lot of other detanglers, do have silicones in them which is what makes the hair "slippery" and easy to get knots out. It does build up in the coat after a while so it is recommended to use a clarifying shampoo every now and then to remove all the residue and build up in the coat. There are some leave in conditioners/detanglers that do not have silicones in them that are good too. I believe Stazko leave in conditioner and Cherry Brook Groom Spray do not. I have both of those as well. |
Detangler Hi, I know this is an old post to reply to but am wondering if there are any updates as to the best detangler for a “soft” coat? I am using CHI for dogs but I don’t feel it works very well. Thanks |
I have never had a need to use a detangler, hopefully other members will chime in and offer up some suggestions. |
