Shaving chest/belly hair ??? For those who groom their own babies, do you shave the chest and belly regions? More specially, do you do this in the winter months? I groom my 2 and I normally let their hair grow a bit in the colder months. The last grooming, 2 weeks ago, I hadn't realized just how long their chest hairs had gotten. Thankfully, they do not get matted but there is a lot of hair. In the summertime I usually keep them really, really short so I shave them down under there. I do shave the private areas and inside the back legs no matter what the season. What's the best thing to do for the chest/belly? Thanks for your responses. |
I don't shave, I just trim. Mostly b/c she won't sit still. |
I keep my two shaved from under the armpits to the potty area even in the winter. They wear clothes every day and it is just easier to keep them from matting without the long hair underneath. |
I have never done anything underneath until recently. The hair is getting so long that it is getting in the way and getting dirty, so I have started trimming. I think it is a matter of what works best for your pups. |
I only shave from armpits to sanitary if the dog get matted there easily from wearing clothes or a harness. Usually when grooming a dog I'll trim the chest and belly above the sanitary area with the same blade I used on the body except in the refer direction of the hair growth so that its a little shorter then the rest. Easiest way to do this is pick up their front legs so they are standing on their rear and clip from sanitary straight up the belly to the chest (usually you go with the direction of growth so that would be from chest to sanitary, but to make it shorter you want to go in reverse). |
Yes I keep the belly shaved and just shave up to slightly beyond the elbow point on the chest. I perhaps keep more hair on the underside of the chest as I would when i retire Razz from showing. And I've taken to shaving his penis as well. Right now because he lives in wraps I don't shave the inner legs, but I will when I cut his hair down. |
I just trim Riley's belly and chest areas..... :) I lay him on his back and he usually falls asleep as I am doing it. LOL!! |
I trim leaving about an inch in the winter, then shave in the summer.... |
Thanks for your responses. They are due for another bath this weekend so I think I will definitely trim then down in those areas. I just always thought that it would give them a little bit more of something to keep them warm in the winter. Fortunately we do not have any matting issues even with t-shirts and sweaters. |

They are just about naked in the summertime, lol, it's just so much easier on them and to see if any ticks get on them. |

What do you clip with on the inside of the back legs (by the bug)? I can't seem to find the blade that works best there. Zhoie's hair is so fine and smooth in that area, nothing seems to clip it off:confused: |

I have used the #40 blade here myself. I was told that this was okay because it has smaller teeth so it would catch skin. I don't tip ears but was also told #40 was for that too. I've used #10 also for the under areas. |
