Experience with the stone/grommel I'm not even sure if that is what it is called. Instead of using the regular nail trimmers; it is an electric device that "grinds" the nail down? I'm thinking of one for my Blackies, as their nails are unbelievably big and hard to do. |
I have a dremel-like thingy. The boys hate it. I managed to use it once on Max and found it made a good nail file. It would probably take forever to take any significant length off of the nails. Our preferred method of nail trimming is walking on rough pavement. :) |
Yeah it's basically a dremmel. I bought one of those horrid things when they first came out. Silly me didn't realize the darn thing is not even on in the commercials! Uni hated it! I wouldn't want that thing to grind my nails either! However I have heard of people having success with it. But yeah, I agree with Kristen, any significant amount you need off would take an eternity. We use pavement as the files lol. |
I have one of the Pedipaws that is a nail grinder. As the nail is ground off the friction produces a lot of heat. Not only that, the smell of burning toenail is horrid. So the only time I use the Pedipaws is to smoothe the ends of nails once they have been cut. |
God that sounds unpleasant to say the least. Okay part of my problem, is that the thickness of their nails means a fair amount of pressure needs to be brought to bear through the handles; ie the squeeze. I have some RA in my two wrists, which makes it difficult to bear enough pressure. I try doing nails after bath, but even then they are pretty firm. I'm tired of running after hubby to get him to trim the Blackies nails. Zoey is fine, but Magic is a "bear" about nail trimming. He growls all the time, and hubby gets so mad and impatient with him. Needless to say he doesn't growl at me when I do. I've talked till I'm blue in the face with hubby, but he and Magic, had some bad run-ins when he was a puppy. Magic has never forgotten, forgiven maybe but not forgotten. Hubby changed his own discipline ways (that was another huge argument), but things got a whole lot better when he trained "my and my trainer's way). So I'm looking for a solution - if I only had to exert maybe 20-25% less pressure, I'd probably be able to do nails on my own. Any ideas? Is there a solution you could soak paws in that would soften the nails? |
Pavement walking is good for Zoey, and truthfully I usually don't have so much problems with hers. Magic I walk only on grass, due to his joint issues. |
In that case, I would just take him to the vet to get them done. |
