The mats that never end! Nilla lately has been getting these terrible mats that I cannot get rid of. I've been trying to break them up with scissors and brush them out with my Madan, but she doesn't want to sit still for it and it is infuriating! I read somewhere it may be a good idea to get a mat rake for such a problem, but what are your opinions on this? Has anyone experienced this problem? I recently switched her to a Happy Tails shampoo and I was previously using Earthbath Puppy shampoo. I'm beginning to wonder if that isn't the problem ... If anyone has opinions or suggestions, please feel free to reply! Thanks! :animal-pa |
Try a good conditioner. I like Biogroom silk creme conditioner, Chris Christensen, Vellus, and Petsilk. When Teddy's coat is a mess, I work a little Petsilk Silk Serum into his hair before using the tail of a rat-tail comb to carefully untangle him. (both of these things can be purchased from YT user Mimimomo at toplinepet.com. I also use a ISINIS brush, available on Amazon, and a face/leg buttercomb. |
Does she have a cotton or silk coat? I wouldn't use a mat breaker on a yorkie since their skin is just so sensitive. I use the small CC slicker brush, hold the mat between my fingers and start tapping at the mat, starting at the ends of the hair and working my way to the root. Use a good conditioner and detangling spray as well. |

A good conditioner that I Like to use that smooths the hair out is loreal vive. With a cotton coat though you will still need to be dilligent with detangler and brushing |
Thanks, I'm slowly but surely realizing this. I already got a detangler, but I need to get a conditioner. Nilla's on a strict 'no bath' schedule for about 9 more days. I'm guessing until her stitches are removed. |
A good conditioner is very helpful, and leaving it on for at least 5 minutes helps. Also, make sure ALL matts are out before you bath her as they will just get even tighter if they washed. Corn startch works wonders for removing the nasty ones, just dump some on the matt, and work through with your forefingers and thumb. Make sure it is dry when you do it, don't water the cornstartch. Then work through it from the ends and work towards the body. The buttercombs from CC works wonders imo. Also for her daily brushing, try using a wooden pin brush., I would stay away from all slickers or matt brakers if you don't want to break her hair and want it to grow in nicely. The puppy coats on Biewers can take over a year to grow out of, up to two years from my experience. You could make it easy on your self and have just her body shaved down ( leave coat on the legs and face and tail, and grow it ou t from there. |

I've found that sticking to a regular bathing schedule really helps with the mats & condition of the coat. Grime and dirt that builds up on the hair makes coat maintenance much more difficult. |
Tia will be two years in January and has a cotton coat. She matted terribly every single day. Although I loved her long hair, I finally convinced her groomer to trim her. She is not shaved, but has more of a puppy cut. Tia became petrified of me combing her hair and I cut out BIG matts all the time and I combed her multiple times a day. Nothing I tried would help. She is happier now and with the winter coming, I can put sweaters on her without having a massive matt when I take it off or change it. A friend said she was cuter with the short hair, but I still loved her long hair. |
Miracle Coat Waterless shampoo is great when you can't bathe your little one. Miracle Coat Spray-On Waterless Shampoo for Dogs at PETCO Try working cornstarch through the matts. I find they are easier to get out when I use cornstarch. Cowboy Magic is also great. |
