Grooming Spray? (anti-static, low fragrance) I have read through tons of different posts about grooming sprays and I can't say that I still have anything figured out. I was reading on either this site or the Maltese one about Crown Royale Grooming Spray formula #1 for Maltese (so that one must have been on the Maltese site), or Coat Handler diluted 15:1 for conditioning after shampooing or 30:1 for brushing? If I used Coat Handler to condition with would that be instead of the Creme Rinse? Maybe that's a dumb question but I'm definitely a newbie in this particular realm. Also does anyone know where I could purchase in Canada? Probably will have to be online as sadly nobody around where I live seems to carry anything decent. Lu is a yorkie/maltese and she has what I suspect is a bit of a dream coat. I have had very little tangles in her hair and I used to brush her every day but have found that I can go for a couple of days and still not have tangles. I haven't had it super long yet and I trimmed it short this past summer so it's only about 2.5" long right now. Since she is only 8" or so tall that kind of medium length on her, but I have had it longer (like maybe 4” or so) and it still didn’t' tangle much if at all. I'd kind of like to keep it that way though and so I realize that as her hair gets longer it will be much more likely to tangle. Any thoughts or suggestions on a grooming spray would be greatly appreciated. As a bit of extra info, I used to use Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy shampoo and the Silk Creme Rinse and loved how Lu's hair was but she seemed itchy for a couple of days afterwards. I tried rinsing extra well and diluting things and that didn't seem to help. Also one of my daughters quite disliked the fragrance that lingered on Lu after her bath. (Not a reason to switch but it was a contributing factor) I switched to earthbath Hypo-Allergenic shampoo and their Creme Rinse and Conditioner and it's quite nice as well but Lu is maybe not quite as soft and silky. The itchiness seems less but not gone. |
I use Vellus Anti-Stat on my boys. Very light scent. Vellus sells a sampler pack if you want to try it. Max tends to get greasy with anything else. I tried diluted Coat Handler conditioner, but it made my boys' coats a mess within a couple of days. Most things make the coat a magnet for dirt and dust. Itchiness could be an allergy to something environmental or food related. If it is related to hair products, make sure the skin isn't drying out. |
Thank you for the suggestions. I will take a closer look at her skin and make sure that it's not getting dry. I try not to bath Lu too often as I have heard that too often is just as bad as not enough, usually not more than once every 10 days or so. Unfortunately I live on the praries and so now that winter is coming the air is crazy dry and literally sucks the moisture right out of your skin. My own skin gets terribly dry this time of year, so it wouldn't be surprising if Lu's was doing the same. I hadn't really thought of that. Thank you for the suggestion about Velus. I will do some reading about it and maybe see about getting a sampler pack. I'm certainly not positive but I don't think Lu's itchiness is food related since it did improve somewhat when I changed products but that could have been completely a coincidence I suppose. The itchiness doesn't seem to last for more than a couple of days though and so I tend to think whatever is causing it wears off or she isn't continually exposed. Just so that there isn't a misunderstanding, it's not that she is crazy itchy, she just seems to scratch more than seems "normal" for a couple of days after her bath. That was what made me suspect the products. Thanks again for the suggestions. |
I like the ice on ice by Chris Christensen. It's got no smell and works great. I have asthma and am sensitive to fragrances so this works nicely for us. My dogs hang on fleece blankets and we have no static. We use a madan brush. |
fragrance free anti-static spray - Chris Christensen Ice on Ice or Cherrybrook Grooming Spray. Both are great products. I use both on dogs and even use Ice on Ice on my own hair. Coat Handler is an excellent line of products and I use them quite a bit as a groomer. On silk coated dogs though I really like Chris Christensen Clean Start as a clarifying shampoo once a month and Day to Day as a basic shampoo (can be used as often as every day without any negative results). After shampooing I use After U Bathe on the coat which is a very light conditioner that flushes out shampoo residue and seals the cuticle. I then towel dry, spritz a little Ice on Ice over the dog and blow dry with a pin brush. Beautiful results for me. I also use Ice on Ice on a dry coat whenever I do brush outs or comb outs so as not to break the hair. |

107barney, what do you use for your shampoo and conditioner. I just know that sometimes that can make a difference to how well a finishing product might work. The no static thing sounds awfully nice. Do you or kalina82 happen to live in particularly dry climates? On the prairies, static in the winter time is brutal! If ice on ice helped with that level of static I would be pretty darned impressed. |
Biogroom offers some anti static spray--i use it on Maddie and it works well, to me it has very little smell. |
I've seen the Bio-Groom spray and wondered about it. I do know I can get it localy. That would make it a bit more convenient if it does a reasonable job. Hmmm lots to think about. Dang I don't want to become a grooming spray hoarder!!! |
