I need some serious advice. All I can do is try to feed Amara very good food rich in fatty acids and try a million different shampoos. But maybe I'm not grooming her correctly. Her coat gets very dry and brittle after like two days of bathing her. Her skin seems fine except for the spots behind her ears still but maybe I'm not brushing her enough or something. Her coat is growing out silver and I've noticed her gold is trying to come in. Am I not brushing her enough? I brush her about every couple of days maybe I should groom her more. I'm not sure. Maybe I need a better conditioning and detangling spray also. So maybe shampoo and conditioner do have something to do with it. Because sometimes before I bathe her she is really shiny on her face. So I guess the food's working but her coat gets dry. I'm just not very sure at all. |
The only thing that comes to mind is...when you brush, do you use a dry brush. You should never brush a dry coat. I mix just a dab of conditioner in warm water and put it in a spray bottle. I spray my brush and then groom. |
I have some pure paws spray that they sent me as a sample. And I still have some petco conditioning detangling spray. I'm in the process of trying shampoos for her. I've been contacting people like crazy. The lady from pure paws says I didn't dilute the shampoo enough so it may be my fault that her coat is like this. :( |
What kind of conditioner are you using? And are you making sure to rinse her really well at the end of her bath to get rid of all the residue? I groom ZoE every morning. She gets combed from head to two with a steel comb and has her topknot put in the for day. I groom her again each night when I take out the topknot & we get ready for bed. It really helps to minimize hair tangles & breakage. |
I always try to rinse her very well. I never brush her coat dry either. I always use some kind of mist or spray. |

You may have already received some answers to this post..but out of curiosity , when you say her coat is brittle, do you mean it's breaking off? Also important of how old is she now. Their coats go through several changes during the first 18 months or so. Some not very desirable changes. |

While it's not a dog product, I've found the best conditioner to use on ZoE (and 11 years of use too on my last yorkie) is Patene Pro-V conditioner. It's cheap and it conditions her hair beautifully. |
