I have cleaned Maya's eyes but the stain remains

Sorry that I am bringing up this issue once again :confused: but I cleaned Maya's eyes and now I am watching it daily and it all looks good but the red stains from the yeast she had before is still showing even after cleaning her hair with shampoo, it wont go away. what should I do? how do I remove the red stain?

I have this same problem, I clean and trim around their eyes (not close) and mine still have stains. Hopefully someone has an answer.

Dogs can experience reactions to thing just like humans, and tear staining can often be a reaction to allergens or irritants among other things. In fact, some dogs will suffer reactions to their food which will change the pH level in your dog’s system which in turn can cause excessive tearing.

Getting the root of the problem is really the only way to eliminate the tear stains. For Taycie, when I put her on a RX hypoallergenic diet for allergies this is FINALLY when her face started to clear up.

There can also be a number of factors as well.. Not only diet, but the high mineral content in water, blocked tear ducts, teething puppies, ear infections, allergies,...etc. It also unfortunately can be genetic. Also keeping the hair trimmed around the eyes to avoid irritation.

Keeping the face clean and dry is a must in reducing stains. One of the biggest causes of tear staining is from a dog having an excessive amount of tears. This high level of moisture can keep the hair around the face wet, which then becomes an area where bacteria can breed. One of the most common forms of this bacteria is called Red Yeast, which causes a yeast infection around the eyes and leads to the brownish-red stains.

I have Tried COUNTLESS tear stain removers and nothing worked until I found the right food. So for every dog, it could be caused by something different. For us it was food allergies, once we figured that out, her little face cleared up so quickly. Getting to the root of the problem that is causing their eyes to stain is your best bet to getting rid of the stains.

After reading some of this information in another thread,we are using ONLY filtered water to start with. My vet has recommended a diet that does not have red beets in it,he also told me yesterday that red beets is what most dogs are allergic to if they have a food allergy,hmmmmm. So today is research day at the pet store,I am a label reader. The food can not have any protein in it except fowl,anything else makes my poodles very ill. Im up for any suggestions.

Filtered water is Brita or if you have an "inline" filter for your water despenser on your frig,this is what we have.

Mine is eating Royal Canin puppy chow ( and I haven't been supplementing with anything else because she seems to prefer the RC) And we have a well with a super duper filter system so I know the water is good. Plus, just to see I tried bottled water and no difference. You think it could be the Royal Canin?

At an earlier suggestion on this board, I started Joni on the bottled nursery water (Gerber, I think). Her eye stains and crusts went away. Was never sure if the water was truly the reason. We just picked her up from a week's stay with my daughter. During this time, Joni drank tap water along with her 'cousins' and sure enough, the eye crust and stain is back. So back on nursery water she goes. I had forgotten how badly the area under her little eyes would gunk up.

Deuce eats RC but I use Nursery water. Went on that early on when I was fighting the eye stain. It seems to work for us too.

My 8 month old Yorkie, JT, selected Royal Canin puppy food too, and has one eye that is always stained red. He refused to eat Science Diet, which the vet recommended. I am curious what food brands others have had success with in clearing up eye stains.

Could you say what brand of puppy food worked for you? I have switched JT to the distilled nursery water, but that hasn't solved the problem.

My two babies drink filtered water and eat Fromm's Grain-Free Game Bird flavor. After rotating between the different flavours (i.e. the different proteins), I found this one to have the least amount of staining for them, albeit every dog is different.

I still wipe their eyes 3-4 times a day and use Tropiclean Facial SPA Tear Stain Facial Cleanser whenever I give them a bath.

Hi. Thank you for the information. I have started JT on half RC and half the Fromm's. Grain free. Game bird flavor. He thinks it is wonderful! So far, no change in belly sounds or other possible indigestion symptoms. Now I'm going to see if PetSmart will refund the unopened bag of RC. In looking around for the lowest price on the Fromm's, I ended getting it through a link on Amazon. I'll let you all know in about a week if the eye stains reduce or hopefully vanish. Again, thank you for the help.

I think Fromm grain free is great! You can try rotating between the flavours after each bag to see which proteins minimise the staining, since every dog is different. Just make sure you do the slow transition (as it seems like you're doing right now).
