What type of shampoo? Hi everyone! We will be getting our Yorkie puppy very soon. Can anyone recommend what type of grooming products I need? Shampoo? Are you supposed to use some type of conditioning rinse? Type of brush/comb? Coat Conditioner? I have a birthday coming up this week and as a present, my family is taking me on a puppy shopping spree. So I was trying to make a list of things to add to the shopping cart. I know I'll need a non-slip mat for baths and a hand held sprayer. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!!! Have a great weekend everyone! |

First I suggest that you ask the breeder what products she currently uses on the puppy for shampoo and conditioner. You will need a pair of puppy clippers to keep nails trimmed, and once pup grows up a slightly bigger pair. A carrier for travel in the car or to the vet. Right now, I would just by a soft bristle brush (Should be fine for a puppy coat), small comb to comb beard and tiny paws. Get Nutrical in case of low blood sugar. Make sure breeder gives you some food that he is eating right now and you know the name of the puppy food, and buy a small bag of same. I like Plush puppy s&c for pups, but this brand is not often found in pet stores, can be ordered on line though. Yes on the conditioning rinse. There are oodle of threads here, as we have some members that love to try out different products. You can purchase a grooming spray, or alternatively dilute some conditioner with water, and place in a spray bottle. Teething toys! Get some unscented baby wipes to clean up butt or other places. I would recommend unless it is unavoidable not to bathe the young pup for about 2wks. You want to make sure they have adjusted to their new home and you. If you are going to pee pad train, then you need pee pads. Buy a play pen, if you have room and can afford it, it is great to have pup in with pee pads, toys, food, water all in one place. So when you can't watch him 24/7 and you can't, then he begins to learn about where to go. No walking, no public places until pup has had all their shots. Buy a small very small sized harness and leash for when you can go out to walk him. Food and water dishes. Hope this helps |
I have used Chris Christensen day-to-day on Riley since I first brought him home. It has Ice On Ice you can spray in between washes.... I get TONS of Compliments on his coat!! You can get a trial kit for $10.00/free shipping at sitstay.com Day To Day System Kit - Dog Supplies I have the cobalt blue Madan Brush and moustache comb from toplinepet.com [you want a pin brush that doesn't have the little knobs on the ends, which can pull the hair] toplinepet.com And, of course a snuggle puppy. Snuggle Puppies - Snuggle Puppy - In Stock also be careful around electrical cords. You can get some critter cord. CritterCord - Protect your pets And, lately, BitterApple for plants...and you can spray it on stuff you don't want chewed, at i haven't found it to stain anything i have sprayed it on.... Grannick's Bitter Apple |
Ohhh I also got a 3-way Rinse Ace sink sprayer.... I got it off of eBay, but this is the one: 3-Way Pet Faucet Sprayer | Rinse Ace I did buy the sink mat from their website though: Sink Bathing Mat - 11" x 14" | Rinse Ace I give him baths every other week in the kitchen sink! :) |
Is the Chris Christensen products safe to use with flea preventative or would it wash it off? |

I know that Frontline Plus says to keep from getting wet until the application area appears dry. I usually wait at least 48-hours After application. FRONTLINE Brand Products remain effective for 30 days, even if a pet swims or is bathed. After application, keep the dog or cat from getting wet until the application area appears dry, usually 24 hours. If a FRONTLINE Brand Product is to be applied after a bath, make sure the pet is completely dry before application. |

I don't do my own grooming, only baths in between. The shampoos and conditioners that I have tried and liked include: Minksheen Yorkie Splash and Shine Chris Christensen Isle of Dogs Shampoo #10 and Conditioner #51 I have tried many others but these are my favorites. Isle of Dogs and Yorkie splash and shine both have a spay that you use in between bathing times. I really like them both. Brush and comb is easy for me. Madan all the way. I too purchased mine from toplinepet. I have used others and there is nothing comparable to the Madan for my girls. Definitively have Nutrical on hand. You never know when you are going to need it. A bed is a must too. We love love love our cloud 9 beds. You can get them at Yorkie Haven Rescue. Of course, food, food and water bowl, toys, etc. Oh, and don't forget toothbrush! ;) Don't worry. After you get your baby you will see lots of things you will want to add later on. It is called the Yorkie Addiction. Once you have it, we will all welcome you to our club. Lol. :D:D Because we have it too!!!!!! |
Wow! You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for all of your information!!! I really appreciate it!!!!! :) |
I use buddy wash-shampoo and buddy rinse-conditioner.it has been good and last for a year for one yorkie and I bath him weekly. |
I use Panteene Shampoo and conditioner. I have tried all the expensive ones and always go back. Brush - use a pin brush. Congratulations on your new baby! |
Thanks everyone! :) |
Does anyone know any non stripping shampoos that are good for dry skin and coat that I can use frequently. I am considering conditioning my Yorkie Amara twice a week now and bathing her once a week. I usually give her a bath every four days. But I think I'm over bathing her. So I feel very bad now. I use Oster Oatmeal Naturals Extra Sooothing Shampoo and the Dermasilk conditioner. Her coat stays soft for one day and becomes dry and tangled very badly. And she is only a puppy. So I need help. I try to keep her very clean and conditioned. Advice would be appreciated greatly. |

You can bathe your baby everyday and it would be fine. Usually what dries the skin is not getting all the soap residue out. So triple check and make sure to get all the soap out.:) |
