Yorkie with dry coat I was given a female yorkie. She is 2 and has been outside & they had shaved her coat except for leaving it a little long on her back. The top of her hair is corse & dry but underneath it is soft & silky. Doubt she has ever had conditioner on her. Do you think it is damaged from the sun, heat & dirt? What can I use to help restore the moisture back to it? Appreciate the help.:) Thanks Wanda & Marlee |
A proper diet and good hair products probably will improve her coat. Could take up to a couple of months to see significant improvement. There are loads of good hair products to choose from. I use Biogroom shampoo and Silk Creme Rinse on Teddy, and Vellus on Max. Chris Christensen Day to Day makes the coat very nice too. |
Thanks, I am still try to get her to eat more than 2 bites. Gave her a little canned food this morn & she did eat that but she just doesn't eat much at all. She was UTD on shots but I wormed her with Panacur. SHe had been outside with a lot of Yorkies so I understand. Poor thing. She slept on my bed this morn. Very sweet, a little skiddish but that is to be expected if not properly cared for. Stays right by my side but shys away some when I reach for her.Guessn it will just take some time for her to feel safe........ |

Not sure I just worm mine every 6 months & then usually never ck.+ for worms at the vet. And since she was outside with several dogs I thiught it probably wouldn't hurt. Is there any type of oil that won't be sticky that I can use on her coat? |
Oil is tricky. It attracts dirt and really shouldn't come into contact with the skin. There are certain kinds that show people use, but their dogs are in wraps 24 hours a day and washed often. A good conditioner is all you really need. Rather than worming every 6 months, which is likely hard on the dog, I would recommend using a monthly worm preventative med (Interceptor covers everything from heartworm to whipworm) and request that your vet test annually as required. |
Dry coat can be caused by lack of protien in diet and/or Omegas. You can add flax seed oil to the diet. Also, Alberto VO5 Hot Oil treatment before shampooing does wonders. There is also a product called Gro & Glo from CopperHillsFarms.com |

I reccomand shaving her all, 1 a week bathe her with good quality shampoo and conditioner, always shampoo 2 and conditioner once. When the conditioner is in the coat leave it in for 2-3 minutes then squeeze all the water out of it and then take her out of the bathtub and blow dry her ! I never wash out conditioner, but if the conditioner is very thick I mix it maybe 1 against 4-5 parts water and shake well then put it in the coat, or just do what it says on the back of the bottle. Also to condition the coat you can take her between baths in the bathtub, just wash with water then to the thing with conditioner again (condition, squeeze the water out, and dry her), it should help the coat to be more soft and silky and it should grow back healthy. |
