Toenail length - question I've had 2 vets tell me that they have found no evidence that cutting a toenail back gradually will get the cuticle to withdraw. I've let Betty Boop's nails get a little too long. My vet cut the tips off only because her cuticles are long. From everyone's experience, does it help to keep cutting them back more and more so the cuticle will withdraw? How often would you get her nails trimmed? Every 2 weeks??? I told one vet that they seem long to me because when she jumps on the kitchen tile floor she almost slips. The dh and I are always grabbing her and taking her to the carpeted area of the den. |
That is interesting that the vets say it doesn't make the cuticle withdraw. I don't trim my boys' nails because they keep them worn down fairly short from walking on the pavement. Not sure what that means for their cuticles. There is no one answer for how often to trim. Depends on how rapidly the nails grow on the individual dog. If the nails are starting to curl, it is time to cut. If you can hear them clicking on hard flooring, it is time to cut. I still believe in doing a little at a time if the nails are overgrown. Do a little and wait a couple of days before doing a little more. |
