Bathing & eyes What brand of shampoo do you use on your doggy's face/head? Is it tearless? How do you rinse the head? How do you avoid getting shampoo in the eyes? Thank you for your input. :) |
I use SPA blueberry facial on the face- it is meant for the face and is tearless, therefore okay to get in the eyes- it was recommended by my groomer. I scrub the face really good and then use my hand to pour water over their face to rinse. I used to be really scared about washing their heads but then I watched the groomer a few times and they really lather up the face and don't worry about getting anything in their eyes, so now I am no longer nervous. |
This is a great question. Mine think I am trying to drown them.:D |
I use Spa Lavish facial scrub and use a small cup to rinse under the eyes and top of the head. I cup their chin in my hand and tilt their heads back to rinse the top of the head. |

Great question and I love the input :) |
I use just normal shampoo on Fido's face :) I have Pet Silk Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Its tearless (almost all, if not all, dog shampoos and conditioners are tearless), I use a little cup to pour the water on the head. I hold the dogs head up so little water goes into the eyes :) |

I don't get right next to the top of their eyes and I just use my fingertip to massage it onto the bridge of the nose and right under and above their eyes. |
I use the Iv San Bernard "Puppy Don't Cry" on Cali's face. It is a bar of soap and lathers up very well and is tearless. I like that it rinses out so well. |
I am currently using Chris Christensen Day-to-Day shampoo and conditioner and love it. I use the kitchen sink and sprayer to bath them. I do the body first, then rinse then the head. I but the palm of my hand over their eyes and rinse the tops of their heads like that. |
I use Johnson and Johnson Tear free baby shampoo, not only smells like babies, but I don't have to worry about it getting into their eyes.To rinse I use my hands to pour the water over their faces, it takes a while since I like to rinse over and over, but the they look and smell great after we are all done |

I use the spa facial on Rosie and Mikki's entire head. I use Minksheen on the rest of their body. I do clean close to the eyes. But try to not get it in the eyes. I use a rag to help me control where it is going. |

I will try the palm over the eyes technique. |
Thank you everyone for sharing your methods and for the tips. :) |
I have always used the Chris Christensen day to day but recently bought some Tropiclean medicated oatmeal shampoo, which I am Loving. I actually emailed Riley's breeder recently to ask what she used. She said the shampoo is tearless and fragrance-free ...Top Performance Soothing Suds for dogs and cats. The conditioner she uses smells yummy...... that one is called Fresh Pet Conditioner for dogs and cats and it's orange in color. She gets both from PetEdge.com. What a Great Thread! I am always really nervous doing his face.... Scared to get around his eyes, nose and scared to get water into his ears!! :( |
I heard j&j baby shampoo is one of the worst products for Yorkie hair, very drying. Quote:

I use Fears for Tears. Not a big face washer. I do the top of her head, tilt head backwards, and rinse with a cup. I try to rinse around her mouth by positioning her head in certain ways, but she jerks so much. |
For Hot Rod, I go between a medicated and an oatmeal shampoo-depending on what I think he needs. Maggie I use the oatmeal. For both I use Biogroom puppy tearless on their heads and faces and beards. I rinse them using a cup. I hold their ears down and pour water over their heads. For both I use a wonderful clean cucumber melon conditioner (from vet). It leaves them so soft and clean smelling. Lately I have been adding a drop or 2 of lemon grass oil to their shampoos. I read that it is supposed to help with ticks. It's a little potent smelling but once they are done, it's not so strong and so far it's not hurt to use it. |
I use Plush Puppy for face/beard. You can use a squeeze bottle for rinsing the face/head. I just use the spray nozzle and tilt head back and rinse off from front of head to rear. I rinse sides of muzzle by directing nozzle sideways away from nose. |
I use this: it's a foam bottle, so it's easy to wash the face with, tearless & smells good. I cup my hand under their chin & fold their ears down w/the same hand & hold their head up so their nose is highest. Then I run the water on their head, making sure it doesn't go in their nose. I've found doing it this way washes/rinses their head very well w/out them thinking that I'm trying to drown them. loll For those w/wigglers, a cup would probably be better. |
Thank you everyone for the product suggestions (more things to try :)) and tips. I washed Teddy today with the Spa facial. He looks great and I think it was easier on his eyes than what I had been using. I'm also exercising more care with the water temperature because I have found that what feels normal to me is way too hot. :( My poor babies. I have grandpa test the water now. |
