adult coat When do yorkies get their adult coat? I ask because i am extremely confused about Coco's coat. Is it possible to be a mixture between silky and cottonny coat? (like certain areas are silky and others cottonny?) Coco's hair doesn't feel as silky and soft as Mickey's but then again Coco is 7 months and i don't know if her adult coat is out. Coco went for a hair cut using clippers back in late May. p.s I tried the cool/hot to touch test and i can't tell because it is extremely hot & humid in the country and coco feels hot. |
I believe it varies from dog to dog. Maximo never really a problem with puppy hair, but Teddy's coat continued to transform all the way through his second year. |
Its her body hair that is confusing me because her heads soft and silky like. I figured that yorkies pretty much reach their adult weight at 7-8months so i thought theyd get their adult coat by now. The colour defo changed. Im not sure if the flash test is a true test but i will attempt it hehe |
Coco is still too young to be sure. You won't be 100% sure till min. of about 1 1/2 years and adult color till 2 to 3 years of age. Yes, each yorkie is different, so you just have to wait. What you are noticing is her puppy coat changing to adult coat. Also be sure her cost is not getting dried out by shampooing. By looking at her photos my guess is silky. They can still continue to increase in size till 1 years of age, but some do not. It really depends on her pedigree line/ancestors. Even grandparents play a part in size. |

One night I Couldn't sleep so I went over coco's pedigree and she comes from a long line of silky haired families :P (i still can't get over that her father is also her grandfather...) i also took a flash picture of coco (oh how i felt bad cuz they musta hurt her little eyes) and they turned green but i dont know if this is a sure thing. Whether coco is silky or cottonny coat i still adore her to pieces :P |
Yorkie adult coat can take more than two years to mature. My Yorkies coat continued to change up until she was three years old, the color stayed dark but took on a dark blue hue, and the texture changed quite a bit. The flash is not a reliable indicator of what type of coat they have, I think what colors their eyes reflect in Natural light (look into their eyes with a natural light source behind them) will tell you more about the depth of color in their coat, more than the type (silky, cotton, modified), jmo. |

My boys' eyes come out all sorts of colors with the flash. My favorite is when Teddy comes out with one bright blue eye and one bright yellow eye. Also depends on the colors in the room we are in when we take pictures and what kind of lights we are using in addition to the flash. |
Wow I didnt realize the texture changed as well as the color. I am hoping my puppy has his mothers coat . I havent seen the fathers all thought she wasnt even fully grown yet when she had them. Only 1 year old so she probably doesnt even have her adult coat either! |
