What Kind Of Nail Clippers... What kind of nail clippers should I get to clip Riley's nails? I have been taking him to the vet's office at $15 a pop...... He always gets a little nervous when they take him into the back. I feel like I can probably do it if I knew what I were doing and had the right type of clippers....and I am sure he'd probably be more comfortable with me doing it. |
I use small cat nail clippers on my yorkie since she has tiny nails. I'd do with either of these types, depending on how thick her nails are: Master Grooming Tools Pet Nail Scissors Medium | PetEdge.com Professional Pet Nail Clipper w/Orange Handle | PetEdge.com they can both be found at petco or petsmart |
I use these: Millers Forge Pet Nail Clipper They are good for the price, but locked closed too easily (not a big deal). I have a pair of guillotene cutters and hate them. |

I got a pet dremel at big lots for $3. It does the job! ;) |
I am trying to find a picture online of the one I use. It has a safety bar on it where the nail butts up against, so when you put it over their nail, it can only cut off a very small amount at one time, no fear of cutting off too much or going to the quick with a small slip. I hit my Bichons' quick ONE time (he screamed, I cried!) and swore I would never do that again to any of my babies, lol. AprilLoves' nails are soooo freeekin tiny and all black, it is hard to tell where the quick is, so this is the best way for me. Also, on the dark nails, when you start to see a dark speck in the middle of the nail where you trimmed it, you are getting close to the quick. Loved learning that one. |

Okay... I just ordered the Millers Forge Pet Nail Clipper. I am going to see if Riley will let me do his nails, at home. I am very nervous about it..... but figure I can at least start by taking a teeny bit off. |
I need to start working w/ Jackson again on this  He's sooo bad about getting his nails done. The thing is, he's not even like biting or moving his body, he just constantly moves his paws when I am trying to hold them still! Little stinker, he knows exactly what he is doing. Then I get nervous because he's moving them so much and I don't wanna cut them too short!! I am going to have to look into those clippers you were talking about AprilLove! :) Please let us know what brand they are if you can! |
