Does anybody know? How long a Yorkies coat goes through this "awkward" stage while it's growing out into their adult coat? I love her to absolute pieces, but I can brush it and literally turn around and it's all over the place again! :eek: Her adult silky fur up next to her body doesn't do this. It's what's around the edges that drives me nuts! It's the black puppy fur. Not her greyish-black adult hair. Also, the hair on the top of her head is growing out silver. Around her face/beard area it's still tan with a black streak going up the center of her forehead. Wil any of this change to all tan? I know only time will probably tell, so how long does it usually take for all these changes to occur? It is amazing to see how many changes she has been through in these last 3 mos! |
Everything depends on genetics. :) If the puppy coat is really troublesome, you can trim. I trimmed Max until he was 6 months old because I thought I wanted a puppy cut. He looked like a cute muppet for a long time. If you click on my profile page, you can see what he looked like when he turned 1 year old. He had fairly good hair length. His head did not really begin to clear in color until he was 2 years old. The lines in his lineage tend to be darker longer. |
Yeah I thought this would probably come down to genetics. It would be a common sense type thing I guess. lol Same with people I suppose. One of my sons eye color changed at like 3 years old. So I guess I will have to be patient and see. ;) I am hoping to grow her coat long, and it is slowly but surely getting there. It's just so nice and silky at the root and about 2-3 inches down. After that, forget about it! It is crazy! lol The difference in the color looks weird to me also. My dh says it looks like she's becoming an old dog fast because of the silver/grey! lol Thank you so much for your reply! Max is adorable btw! Love his sweet little face! :) |
Thank you for the compliment on Max. Ha, tell your DH that your cutie couldn't possibly look old. When I first brought Max home, I couldn't wait for him to turn silver. As he began to mature, I wanted him to stay dark. Now I just sit back and enjoy watching whatever comes on both my boys. :) |

That's a hard one to answer. They are all different, like potato chips!!!! :D My AprilLove had a crummy puppy coat and I thought I would always keep her in a puppy cut. So I cut it short from 6 months to a year, then decided to grow it out. It took her until after 3 years old to get her final coloring and her coat texture changed dramatically around that time also (for the better). The growing out part is the hardest (especially around the face if you trim that, which I would never have done if I knew then what i know now, LOL), but once you get the long coat, maintaining is pretty easy, imo. How old is your sweetie? |

File a complaint 1 Attachment(s) So sorry this happened but I think you should file a complaint to save others from this person's awful behavior and attitude. I'm looking in this section because my girl is getting quite scruffy looking and I want to be able to groom her myself. She had one visit to the petsmart groomer but I stayed the entire time, I was so paranoid of what would happen to my baby. All I had them do was her feet, rear end and try to clip the top third of her ears as well as cut her nails. I am going to learn all I can; I'd much rather be the one to make a mistake than to pay someone and get angry to boot. I met a woman and her yorkie looked great and she, as well as posts here have given me confidence that I could learn to do it myself. Maybe that's what you should try?
